In a small club baseball club, Abby Calvin Lalouche (Tim Robbins) is a pitcher with great potential but nothing in his head. He enlists the help of famous receiver, “Crash” Davis (Kevin Costner), to frame him and make him a big club player. At the same time, a certain Annie, a baseball fan (the great Susan Sarandon), chooses Abby as her lover and also helps her become better.
And can you enjoy this movie if you don’t care about baseball? Absolutely!
Available on Prime Video, Duo à trois is a good movie for baseball fans, but it’s also a good movie overall, with its share of twists and turns, humor that’s admittedly a bit heavy-handed and dated, but also its rather unrestrained romantic aspect, which makes it more contemporary than other feature films of the era.
incredible success
In 1988, a certain Ron Shelton, the screenwriter of Roger Spottiswoode’s film Under Fire, had the idea to make a French version of “Bull Durham” or Duo à trois. He recruited Kevin Costner, who appeared in The Incorruptibles and One Way, Susan Sarandon (whose Roger Ebert said that only he could give credibility to his character) and Tim Robbins, who will be revealed thanks to this role.
If the film is a little difficult to get off the ground, it was shot in 56 days on a multi-million dollar budget and will bring in 50.9 million on American soil! A huge success that would lead Costner to his next film, also partly devoted to baseball, Ron Shelton would be able to finance his second feature, the biopic Blaze with Paul Newman, Robbins would get his first role as Eric Viking, and Sarandon would star in the excellent A White and Dry Season.
