We’ve been waiting three years (three years!) for the grand finale of Stranger Things, clearly Netflix’s best sci-fi series in our hearts and fans. It’s hard to believe that Season 5 is just a few weeks away, but the action-packed trailer released by Netflix proves that it’s not a hoax!
Set to Queen’s smash hit Who Wants to Live Forever?, this haunting, nearly three-minute trailer reveals exactly why this final chapter took so long to arrive.
What began as a disturbing small-town horror story has transformed into a fantastic action epic (in every sense of the word), with spectacular sequences and top-notch special effects taking center stage in this first look.
Although the plot is shrouded in mystery, Netflix and the Duffer brothers seem more concerned with reintroducing these beloved characters (rather than lifting the veil on what they’re actually up against).
Here are 5 moments from the trailer that really make us wonder and wonder about this grand finale.
Hawkins is in quarantine
Season 4 of Stranger Things ended with the boundary between our world and the Upside Down finally breached, with Hawkins’ characters watching a parallel dimension contaminate their once peaceful and welcoming town.
Based on this trailer, it looks like the US government has responded by placing Hawkins and its residents in quarantine, with no one allowed in or out, while military posts guard all routes connecting it to the outside world.
Mike (Finn Wolfhard) points out to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) that the group “starting to lose control“after being”stuck“In Hawkins indefinitely, with no end in sight, unless they can get this horrible situation under control.
Later, several characters are seen using underground tunnels, which may be the team’s way of evading surveillance as they investigate a growing conspiracy in their downtown.
Eleven finally took full control
Eleven has certainly achieved some pretty incredible feats in the past, but they’ve usually come with a caveat: she’s not always in control of her powers, and they can drain her.
If that’s still the case, it’s not evident in this trailer, where Eleven constantly uses her telekinetic powers in action sequences, including a great shot where she literally flies across a barbed wire in the middle of the night.
This is presumably one of the military bases set up in Hawkins in response to the monsters invading the city; Later footage shows a group of Demogorgon destroying facilities and their troops.
Lucas saves Max, but will he wake up?
Sadie Sink stole the show in Season 4 as Max, a troubled teenager who becomes a prime target for Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bauer) as he struggles with his own demons and faltering mental health following the horrific death of his older brother.
In a shocking climax, Vecna finally throws Max, blinding him, breaking his bones and putting him in a deep coma. Eleven feared she would never wake up because she could no longer telepathically locate her mind.
After this trailer, we still don’t know if Max will wake up, but we notably see her boyfriend Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) pick her up from the hospital as the monsters head on from the attack.
Holding a comatose Max, Lucas also holds his boombox, which is probably still played by Kate Bush. If so, maybe it’s time to try another song (even though we love Running Up That Hill)?
Dustin is pretty broken up… and grieving?
It should be noted that fan-favorite kid Dustin (Gayten Matarazzo) looks pretty badass in this trailer. In several shots, we see him visibly injured, with two black eyes and other cuts and bruises on his face.
In this state, we see her crying in the arms of her best friend Steve (Joe Keary), who seems very concerned and sympathetic about what has just happened – or is about to happen.
Of course, maybe Dustin’s tears are falling because he’s had a brush with death and he’s just feeling the emotions. Who could blame him?
However, while it is widely speculated that not all characters will survive this season, one wonders if these scenes are a foreshadowing of impending doom.
The will is the key, but who will die?
As Noah Schnapp once said:History began with Will and will end with Will.“
That statement is fully confirmed by this trailer, as the bond between Will Byers and the Upside Down seems poised to be used by Vekna once again to further her nefarious ends.
BA ends on a dramatic note, with Will teleported to his monstrous rival, who maliciously declares:Help me one last time.“But would the Duffer brothers really kill Will Byer? It’s unlikely.”
After all, we’ve seen these characters — and the actors who play them — grow on screen, go through tough times, and come out of it through friendship and solidarity. It would be a bit depressing if any of these youngsters died at the last moment.
Older characters, on the other hand, are ready targets, as the series has already proven in the past. That’s why fans are worried about Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Steve, who appear very little in this trailer.
Additionally, Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) are also at the center of the action this time around, with several moments in the trailer putting them in danger. On the bright side, Nancy looks pretty cool with a machine gun.
The first episode of Stranger Things season 5 will be released on November 27 on Netflix.
