This iconic sci-fi series was recently canceled, but its spin-off is coming sooner than expected!

What has been expected for months is now official: Disney+ will not be renewing its partnership with the BBC to air Doctor Who. The sci-fi series, which has been around since 1966, hasn’t really been cancelled, as it’s been announced to return for Christmas 2026 (!) with a new lead artist and presumably a new creative team at the helm.

A series that found the perfect concept for self-renewal

The duration of the program is explained by the regular updating of its main artists. Doctor Who features the Doctor, an alien from the planet Gallifrey, who travels through time and space on his adventures.

This character has the power of regeneration, which allows him to change his appearance to escape death. About fifteen actors (David Tennant and Matt Smith, to name a few) and one actor (Jodie Whittaker, to name a few) have played him since 1966, most notably Nkuti Gatwa in recent episodes.

Before the return of Doctor Who, fans will be able to step back into the world of the series thanks to its spin-off Between the Land and the Sea. The BBC has revealed that the spin-off series, which combines sci-fi and an eco-political message, will air on its channels from next December, instead of 2026 as originally planned.

Several spin-offs have already seen the light of day

Another good news awaits French fans, as the series will indeed be broadcast on Disney+ (as stipulated in the deal between the platform and the BBC). If you can’t find Doctor Who next Christmas, here’s a surprise end-of-year gift that’s sure to be appreciated.

Over the years, there have been many Doctor Who spin-offs. The most famous of them is, of course, Torchwood, but let’s also mention programs that are very popular with the most dedicated fans, such as The Adventures of Sarah Jane and K-9 and Company (a cute robot-canine), or the ambitious (but unfortunately unsuccessful) class.

The TV series Between the Land and the Sea, adapted from the Doctor Who universe, will soon be available on Disney+.
