The musician embarked on a week of live streams that allowed fans into his life and studio

Live streaming is becoming an increasingly mandatory part of being an artist. More and more rappers and singers find themselves collaborating with established streamers or hosting their own multi-hour sets on personal channels. Last week, Justin Bieber got in on the action, launching his verified channel on Twitch and embarking on several consecutive days of broadcasts.

Between the more harmless footage of him playing basketball or chatting with his large group of friends, the most interesting and intimate parts of the broadcasts were when Bieber entered the studio. Whether alone in a vocal booth or sitting on a couch behind the soundboard with your entourage, Bieber used these moments to preview new R&B-tinged tracks, songs that seem suited for a third installment of Swag (if they ever see the light of day).

The most captivating moments were the behind-the-scenes footage of Bieber self-producing and working on a vocal recording or lyrics. On the fourth day of broadcasts, he could be seen working on a melody for a potential new hit. He improvises on the mic, trying to find the right vibe, and experiments with his delivery and some potential lyrics.

The recording footage is a rare window into the art of Bieberespecially as a former child pop star who many assumed lacked autonomy over his own musical and career decisions. Here, Bieber he seems both free and at the height of his creativity, exploring without inhibitions even as thousands of people are silently watching.

However, he’s also honest about how nervous this all makes him. In one of the broadcasts, he is joined by some collaborators and opens up about putting the creative process online for everyone to see.

“Go to Twitch It’s vulnerable as hell because people who just feel bad about themselves project and then write mean things. It’s hard enough to put yourself out there and on top of that you have to read all of this,” he says.

He shared that he read a comment recently after coming home from playing basketball when he was exhausted. “They were like, ‘Justin It’s not as exuberant. He will never be his exuberant self again. He lost his charisma’. I was like, ‘What? I just played basketball last night, I’m just tired.’ And we’re talking about emotional stuff… And I start to get in my head, like, ‘Man, have I lost my charisma? My exuberance?’ I have a zest for life… It sucks that you can have a million people saying the nicest things and then that one comment gets in your head.”

Elsewhere in the video, Bieber he seems relaxed playing golf or practicing drums, apparently testing the format he will continue to share from now on.
