Film about violence in the Amazon, “Alien Nights” wins the Gramado Festival

The Gramado Film Festival consecrated “Alien Nights” as the winner of its 50th edition, in a ceremony that took place on Saturday evening (20/8) in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul. Sérgio de Carvalho’s feature film won six Kikitos, including Best Picture and three Acting Trophies, split between Gabriel Knoxx (Best Actor), Chico Diaz (Best Supporting Actor) and Joana Gatis (Best Supporting Actress) , as well as an honorable mention for Adanilo Reis.

Also awarded by critics, the Kikitos collection was a great recognition of the first Acre production presented at the festival, in its 50 years of existence. With a very current and relevant theme, the film addresses the impact of the arrival of criminal factions from southeastern Brazil in the Amazon, threatening local life.

The trophies for best director and actress went to “A Mãe” and its interpreter, Marcélia Cartaxo. Cristiano Burlan’s drama follows a single mother from the outskirts of São Paulo who, returning home at night and unable to find her teenage son, begins a search that threatens the tranquility of local drug dealers.

The Audience Award went to “Mars Um”, which also won a Special Jury Award and Kikitos for Best Screenplay and Score. Gabriel Martins’ film follows a suburban family trying to live their dreams in a country that has just elected a man who represents the opposite of all that they are as president.

The jury of the festival also recognized the technical quality of Tinnitus, by Rui Poças, awarded in the categories of Photography, Editing and Artistic Direction. The production tells the story of a Diving athlete who suffers from a crisis of tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and falls off the diving board. Away from sports, she swaps heels for a quiet life in an aquarium, where she works as a mermaid.

The four films did not give space to “A Porta ao Lado”, by Julia Rezende, “O Clube dos Anjos”, by Angelo Defanti, and “O Pastor eo Guerrilheiro”, by José Eduardo Belmonte, who left the event only with the certificate of participation.

The 50th edition of the event also innovated with its first documentary competition, which awarded Kelly Cristina Spinelli’s “Um Par para Chamar de Meu”. The film discusses themes such as loneliness and sexuality in old age, showing women who pay to have a date and keep dancing at dances and parties. One of these women is the director’s mother.

In the foreign competition, the highlight was “9”, a co-production between Uruguay and Argentina directed by the duo Martín Barrenechea and Nicolás Branca. The 9 in the title refers to the jersey number of a successful footballer, who suffers media harassment and pressure from his surroundings, and tries to escape the hell that his life has become. He won the Kikitos for best foreign film and actor (Enzo Vogrincic).

Considered a great success, the festival’s return to its face-to-face format has brought occupancy of hotels in Gramado to 90%, according to the industry union. More than 300,000 people passed through the city during the event, according to officials.

In addition to the film sessions, the event featured tributes to director Joel Zito Araújo, winner of the 2004 Gramado Festival with “Filhas do Vento”, which received the Eduardo Abelin Trophy, to actress Araci Esteves, winner of the Festival of Brasilia 1997 for “Anahy de las Misiones”, awarded with the Cidade de Gramado Trophy, and the protagonist Marcos Palmeira, currently aired in the soap opera “Pantanal”. He received the Oscarito Trophy for Lifetime Achievement, after winning two Kikitos at the Rio Grande do Sul festival for his performances in “Barrela: Escola de Crimes” (1990) and “Dedé Mamata” (1988).
