“Game Of Thrones” fans are gearing up for a return to Westeros this Sunday (21), with the premiere of “House of the Dragon”, a spin-off that takes place 200 years before the original series. According to the creators, the new work should not reinvent the already established universe and will remain faithful to the work of George RR Martin.
Three years after the controversial “Game Of Thrones” finale, the story of Westeros is now back as told by a new duo of showrunners. Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several episodes of the original series, is now returning to derivative and is expected to direct some of the main chapters as well, including the premiere. The command is shared with Ryan Condal (“Colony”), who created the concept for the series together with the author of the books.
In an interview with New York Times, the duo explains that the intention in creating “House of the Dragon” is precisely because, although the story is unpublished, it does not differ much from the tone of “Game Of Thrones”. The new series is based on the book “Fire and Blood”, taken from “A Song of Ice and Fire”, a work adapted in the eight seasons of GoT.
“The decision was somehow made by us: George really wanted to tell this story. Of all the stories that have been considered, it’s the closest to the show’s original tone. It has to do with the Targaryens and their dynasty, so it’s accessible in that sense. Contains more dragons. People will say they don’t like dragons and they don’t have their eyes on dragons, but they like dragons, they help, ”says Sapochnik.
“This had more resonance with the original series, when we see Daenerys after the fall of the empire. She is running around the East relying on the kindness of strangers, or perhaps the greed of strangers who want to put her on the throne to get rich. About her Her memory of her, the stories he was told about the height of the Targaryens, the shining city on the hill: this is the story.
“House of the Dragon” is a prequel to “Game Of Thrones”
The creators also claim to have entered the project with the intention of replicating the success of the original series, but without repeating what they did in the previous show. “It seems very important that if you are going to evolve beyond ‘Game of Thrones’, you have to respect it first. It worked too, so why try to reinvent it? But just replicating the original show would do the story a great disservice, because we have what is actually a kind of romantic quality. The perspective is what’s different, because it’s a female perspective, ”says Sapochnik.
One of the main changes in the new series is the increased presence of fantastic elements, such as dragons. In the original show only in the last few seasons do these creatures appear more often. In “House of the Dragon”, as the name suggests, they will play a much bigger role.
“I’d say we’re building on the previous show, which showed people dragons as part of this world. We had White Walkers, direwolves, direwolves, ice spiders, all that stuff. As the series progresses, the only fantasy is dragons and prophecy, and the dragons are somewhat tame, they have saddles, ”Sapochnik explains.
As for the controversial “Game Of Thrones” ending, showrunners aren’t worried about the chances of this negatively impacting the spinoff. “It was such a generational event – people had a lot of anticipation about where the show was going to end and what it was going to be. I think it was a grieving process for many fans who have spent a decade with this particular story. “
“I think this grieving process probably led them to want to return to Westeros, even though they are a little unsure: ‘Will I fall in love again only to hurt myself when everyone else dies and I have to leave? ? “But we have an amazing gift because we have a pre-existing fan base that didn’t exist when the show originally launched in 2011.”
Episode 1 of “House of the Dragon” arrives on HBO Max this Sunday, August 21st at 10pm.
The “House of the Dragon” post is not supposed to reinvent the world of “Game Of Thrones”, claims that the showrunner first appeared on Olhar Digital.
