Tonight on TV: A completely forgotten SF movie starring Sean Connery

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: A breathtaking space thriller directed by Sean Connery.

Having already ventured into the science fiction genre with Capricorn One, Peter Himes explored the space-western subgenre with Outland in 1981. Set in the distant future, the film takes place in a mining colony on Jupiter’s moon Io, where William T. O’Neill, a federal marshal played by Sean Connery, investigates a series of incidents and fights to survive.

If the cold, metallic and inescapable world reminds us of Alien, The Eighth Passenger (1980), the main character has the build of a lonely cowboy, which is clearly reminiscent of Gary Cooper’s Three Whistles on the Train (1952).

A social and philosophical fable with disturbing resonances, external It deserves to be (re)discovered, especially for its exciting atmosphere and its innovative special effects (it is the first film to use the IntroVision process and allows, among other things, to integrate life-size models into the sets).

Upon release in theaters, external It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $17.3 million in the United States, which was insufficient considering the estimated budget of $16 million.

Nevertheless, it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Mixing, as well as six Saturn Award nominations in the categories of Best Science Fiction Film, Best Actor for Sean Connery, Best Screenplay, Best Music for Jerry Goldsmith, Best Special Effects, and Best Supporting Actress. This last prize is Francis Sternhagen.
