Dennis Rodman was known as one of the most dominant and eccentric personalities on the basketball court during his 14 seasons in the NBA. However, in recent years he has become something of a diplomat, having repeatedly tried to iron out international problems. More recently, Rodman revealed that he “got permission” to go to Russia to seek the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner. But the White House has since reacted and doesn’t seem happy with the basketball veteran’s plans.
It was last weekend that the former Chicago Bull announced his intention to travel to Russia to defend Brittney Griner, who was recently sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to drug charges. Dennis Rodman didn’t go into details of his plan, but the Hall of Famer seemed determined to make the trip, according to his interview with news from nbc :
I have permission to go to Russia to help this girl. I am looking to go there this week. … I know Putin too well.
Something the famous sports personality hasn’t made clear is who gave him the alleged “clearance”. However, one thing seems clear, and that is that he is not from the White House. A spokesman for the Biden administration released a statement on the matter and the WH would prefer the retired athlete to stay out of trial:
It is public information that the administration has made a significant offer to the Russians and anything other than continuing to negotiate through the established channel risks complicating and hindering liberation efforts.
Phoenix Mercury player Brittney Griner, WNBA champion and star, was arrested for drug trafficking in February after being detained at Sheremetyevo International Airport. Griner was preparing to return to the United States after playing a season with Russia’s UMMC Yekaterinburg when it was discovered that she had vaporizer cartridges in her possession containing less than an ounce of hash oil. After being detained for months, Griner’s trial began on July 1 and she eventually pleaded guilty. She received her nine-year sentence on August 4th and has since filed an appeal .
It is fair to say that this would be a difficult situation for Dennis Rodman. But as mentioned, he’s been put in some tough spots before (and I’m not talking about when intervened in the feud between Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan ). Between 2013 and 2018, Rodman traveled to North Korea , where he did basketball shows. He also got close to the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, which is why Rodman was not amused by Seth Rogen’s attitude. The interview . The five-time NBA champion relied on that relationship when he called Jong-Un in 2013 to free American prisoner Kenneth Bae. The The Korean-American missionary was finally released Next year.
Currently, Dennis Rodman (soon to be the subject of a film) has yet to respond to the White House statement. Honestly, it’s hard to say whether Rodman will follow Biden’s board of directors and stay out of this international incident.
