Tatiana, how did you feel when you were offered the role of Jennifer Walters, as well as She-Hulk?
Tatiana Maslany: It was a nice surprise, especially since I was going to play a lawyer and superhero dream. Especially since Marvel rejected my candidacy three times! So on the fourth try I felt super lucky. This series has all the ingredients of a great Marvel production with maximum action and special effects. Plus, we’re also curious about Jennifer’s emotional side and personal life, especially when she’s on dating apps. I like these more intimate and personal moments. We should not forget that it is a series with a large dose of humor.
Kat, do you realize you’ve been a She-Hulk fan since you were a kid?
Kat Coiro (Producer): Yes, I remember the She Hulk covers with other male superheroes. I had no idea who it was, but it caught my eye. It looked massive and seemed to dominate comic book covers. Of course I bought them all. When Marvel offered me this series, it was a little girl’s dream come true. I really gave it my all for this series, which oscillates between the typical Marvel universe with its big action sequences and humor. I tried the ingredients I liked well to spend half an hour entertaining and fun.
Ginger, can you tell us a little bit more about Nick?
Ginger Gonzaga: In fact, he looks exactly like me. He is not afraid of anything, he is completely free in his thoughts and actions. He encourages you to do the same. Nick is by Jennifer’s side to encourage and support her in this new existence. Behind every superhero there is always a person who stands by his side. Nick always tries to lighten the situation and make Jennifer smile again because she sometimes loses it due to many challenges.
How is She-Hulk different from other characters in the Marvel Universe?
Jessica Gao (showrunner): I think with a series like this we have an opportunity to develop the character of She-Hulk, as opposed to a movie where we have to go faster. I think he’s different because he seems like a really normal person, with friends, family, before he was this all-green, muscle-bound hero. He is a person with real feelings, with ups and downs like all of us. That makes him different and I think we can identify him. It took us some time to come up with the perfect formula for the series format. Especially with the idea of Jennifer/her Hulk talking to the audience. We tried several possibilities. There was even one where there were notes on the screen, like in the comics and commentary, and then he had interactions with those notes. But it was not preserved. Finally, he occasionally addresses the audience directly to the camera.
Kat, does this series have a particular style and is part of a particular genre?
Kat Coiro: Let’s say every episode has a style and is of a different genre. Although it is a series with 30-minute episodes set in the world of lawyers, it is also an action series and a drama series with lots of suspense. I also like that this series shows the background of the superhero universe. We really get into his intimacy every episode. It’s a unique approach, I think.
Tatiana, did Mark Ruffalo give you any advice on becoming the Hulk?
Tatiana Maslany: He never really recommended anything, but was always there if I had a question or hesitation. I mostly watched him transform from Bruce to the Hulk. He has his own technique. Bruce is lying on the ground and then suddenly jumps up and down without moving his arms and becomes the Hulk. He’s been playing the Hulk for ten years, so he has complete control over the character.
Mark Ruffalo guest stars in Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk.
Who could She-Hulk be intimate with?
Tatiana Maslany: I would like to have one with Batman… the one from the 60’s series with Adam West. I love this series.
Ginger Gonzaga: I think we should introduce him to Groot. It’s a surreal idea, but it’s going to be one hell of a match.
Ultimately, what will viewers take away from this series?
Tatiana Maslany: I really hope they have as good a time as we did filming this series. It really is pure fun. I also hope that this character inspires young girls to have even more confidence in themselves and never limit their path in life. We all have the She-Hulk in us, and I hope that’s the message we get from our series.
