The King Kong live-action series in development at Disney +

Disney + owes the world’s most famous giant gorilla to the small screen, according to reports from the streaming platform that is developing a new live-action series of King Kong.

King Kong has a lot of big-screen shooting, with several films of the character since his film debut in 1933. He recently returned to theaters in “Godzilla vs. Kong, ”a 2021 film. But a King Kong series would be a novelty in the gorilla’s resume.

According to information from the magazine Deadline“King Kong”, which is currently the title of the production in development, will follow the origins of the gorilla in a dramatic action-adventure series that “brings the story of the classic monster into the modern era”.

The idea is to take the audience on a new journey to Skull Island to explore the origin of a new Kong, focusing on the creature’s mythology and the supernatural mysteries of the jungle it was born into.

The series will be created and written by “Paper Girls” Stephany Folsom and James Wan is on the project as executive producer. The production will be inspired by Merian Cooper’s original books and Joe DeVito’s recent novels.

It’s not even the first time King Kong has nearly hit a television production, and it’s also not the only series in development with the character. “King Kong Skull Island” was developed by another creative team and would also have been inspired by the novels of DeVito and Cooper, but in the end it didn’t take off.

On the other hand, Netflix is developing an animated series called “Skull Island”, part of Warner Bros. MonsterVerse, which will gain a new chapter in “Godzilla vs. Kong 2”, which is in production under the direction of Adam Wingard.

Although the rights of the character are in the possession of Warner Bros., according to Collider there are some “tangles” in this regard, which allow Disney to get to work on its own live-action series of King Kong, completely separate from MonsterVerse.

In addition to Folsom and Wan, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, Marc Manus and Dannie Festa are also involved in the projects as executive producers.

“King Kong” for Disney + does not yet have an announced release date and it is not even clear if the production has already gotten the green light from Disney.
