Netflix just released the first trailer for Athena, one of the biggest movies of the season. Director Romain Gavras turns the suburbs into a Greek tragedy.
Power-ups, exceptional drama, complex characters… With Athena – his first film in collaboration with Netflix – director Romain Gavras offers a Greek tragedy with a capital T. And it takes place in the city of Athens. It gives its name to the goddess of war.
Recalled from the front after the death of his younger brother, who died as a result of alleged police interference, Abdel sees his family torn apart. Between his younger brother Karim’s desire for revenge and his older brother, dealer Moktar’s threatened business, he tries to calm the tension. Minutes later, the city of Athena is transformed into a fortified fortress, the scene of a family and collective tragedy. Just when everyone thinks they’ve found the truth, the city descends into chaos…
A synopsis reminiscent of La Haine, which Athena can claim to be a successor to, and Les Misérables (directed by Ladj Ly also co-produced the film). In any case, Netflix seems to be betting on this feature film, which will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2nd.
On the distribution side, actors Dali Bensalah (The Dying Can Wait), Anthony Bajon (Teddy), Alexis Manent (Les Misérables), Ouassin Embarek (Eddie) and Sami Slimani, making his feature debut here, grace the screen.
Athena, a film to be discovered on Netflix from September 23rd.
