In celebration of Dragon House’s launch day on OCS on Monday, George RR. Martin spoke The Wall Street Journal Let’s talk about the franchise adapted from his bestsellers.
While Game of Thrones has been a phenomenal success for HBO, winning an Emmy and gaining a huge fan base around the world, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss decided to end the series after eight seasons. Martin revealed that he’s pushing for many more seasons, with the idea of further expanding the narrative of this sprawling story:
“I said it needed at least 10 seasons and maybe 12, 13. I lost that battle.“
In the end, George Martin hasn’t said much about the final seasons of Game of Thrones, as the events of the series go beyond the storyline established by the books published so far. Also in the WSJ he said:
I didn’t get anything in the later seasons except to invent the world, the story and all the characters. I think I’m more influenced by Dragon House now than the original series.
The author also talked about the unconventional process of developing the spin-off, for which five different concept teams visited him at his home in Santa Fe to pitch their respective visions. “It was like the NFL playoffs and I was coaching every team“, he said.It was a little weird emotionally.“
Among those bids, HBO shelved the concept after production of a pilot starring Naomi Watts and reportedly costing $30 million. Martin apparently had reservations about the concept before shooting it, given that it’s set “An ancient and briefly described era” in his books.
