Netflix will not produce the second season of “Resident Evil: The Series”. The first live-action series based on the famous video game was canceled after just one season, which ended with an unsolved hook.
According to the website Deadline, the series didn’t attract all the audiences Netflix expected would justify the high cost of its production.
The series had the “misfortune” (programming error) to debut close to “Stranger Things” and never reached the top of the platform’s most viewed charts. In its first week on the air, it peaked at # 2, dropping to # 3 the following week and disappearing from the Top 10 within three weeks.
To complicate matters, it had a poor critical reception, with only 55% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. The public opinion on IMDb is even worse: 3.9 (or 39%), generating expressions of nostalgia for the films starring Milla Jovovich.
The attraction featured an unprecedented story in the franchise, centered on the daughters of villain Albert Wesker, a character from the original 1996 game, and told in two parallel timelines.
One part is the origin story, which follows sisters Jade and Billie Wesker at age 14 as they move to New Raccoon City and discover that their father may be hiding dark secrets that can destroy the world. The second part takes place in London, 15 years later, when the Wesker apocalypse reduced the population of the Earth to less than 15 million inhabitants – and more than 6 billion monsters: people and animals infected with the T-virus. It is in this world that Jade, now 30, struggles to survive, despite being haunted by secrets from the past involving her sister and her father.
The highlight of the cast, Lance Reddick, who integrated the series “Lost”, “Fringe” and the “John Wick” franchise, was the first black actor to play Albert Wesker, while Ella Balinska (“Charlie’s Angels”) and Tamara Smart (from “Horror Club”) starred in the adult and teen versions of Jade, and Siena Agudong (“No Good Nick”) and Adeline Rudolph (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) played the two stages of her sister Billie. .
