Dragon House on OCS: What is the connection between Rhaenyra and Daenerys Targaryen?

Based on the book “Fire and Blood” by George AR Martin, House of the Dragon is the first spin-off of Game of Thrones. Centered on the Targaryen dynasty, this spin-off series takes place approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

We follow the succession wars in the Targaryen family for the Iron Throne and the beginnings of the decline of the dynasty to the civil war called “The Dance of Dragons”. Among the main characters we find Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Millie Alcock in her youth, and then by Emma D’Arcy in the rest of the series.

With her strong character, her power, her desire for freedom and the injustices she has suffered, Rhaenyra Targaryen reminds you of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), the mother of dragons and heroine of Game of Thrones. So what is the relationship between the two women?

In Game of Thrones, which takes place after House of Dragons, Daenerys is clearly a descendant of Rhaenyra. But how are they related? We must refer to the Targaryen family tree created by George A.R. Thanks to Martin’s books, namely Fire and Blood, which is the inspiration for Dragon House.

Warning, if you haven’t read the book or don’t know the story, the sequel may contain spoilers. Rhaenyra is the daughter of King Visser I and his first wife Emma Arryn. And if Rhaenyra marries Laenor Velarion for appearances, she will also secretly marry her uncle Daemon Targaryen, with whom she will have four children, including Viserys II.

His Targaryen descendants include Aegon IV, Maecar I, Aegon V, Jaehae II and Aerys II, otherwise known as the Mad King and father of Daenerys Targaryen. Therefore, Daenerys is a direct descendant of Rhaenyra, and the latter is her great-great-great-great grandmother.

But this connection is biased because the relationship between Renira and the demon is incestuous. In the Targaryen dynasty, it is not uncommon to marry a brother, sister, or other family member to maintain the bloodline. Therefore, Daenerys is also Rhaenyra’s seven times first cousin.
