And it wasn’t just one, no. Various. It was an episode of intrigue and fussiness, taking place nearly six months after the events shown in the pilot. The action was up to the dragons: a nuclear war almost ensues between Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) and her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith), who, narcissistic as he is, headed to Dragonstone, the land of the Targaryens on the Continent Western. Of course, he would not simply obey his brother, King Viserys (Paddy Considine), and be reunited with his wife in Pietradiruna.
And what dragons! It’s really cool how the series establishes more differences between them than game of Thrones they had, not only in terms of colors, but also shapes, behaviors and even their ways of expressing themselves.
But it was actually more of a dramatic episode. Going back to Daemon, he not only crouched on Dragonstone nearly six months ago, but, doubling the taunt, he steals one of the dragon eggs. Not just any egg, but the one that Rhaenyra had chosen for Baelon, her little brother killed in childbirth along with her mother. Viserys, who was passing a terrible cloth to his brother, is furious. But Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) doesn’t let him fall into provocation and instead “negotiates”. Let’s just say that your talent as a negotiator is not very efficient and it is Rhaenyra who saves the day.
Earlier in the episode, Rhaenyra, who was named heir to the Iron Throne but continues to serve wine and water to the members of the Little Council, had suggested using dragons to dissuade the Fat Crab from its actions on Stepstone, an ensemble. of islands .east of Dorne. Everyone looks at her with that “who thinks this girl is?” Face. The princess is then sent to choose the new Lord Commander of the Royal Guard. He wants someone with battle experience. And see if the only one with battle experience isn’t crushing Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel).
The episode begins, among other things, with stomach-churning scenes of men – presumably pirates – being eaten alive by crabs. The Fattening Crab, or Craghas Drahar, is reportedly funded by at least some of the Free Cities. Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), who makes his fortune in the maritime trade, is furious. But Viserys is not ready to start a war.
Viserys is also not thinking of remarrying, but, being king, it is his duty. Velaryon and his wife, Rhaenys (Eve Best), the king’s cousin, offer their daughter Laena Velaryon (Nova Foueillis-Mosé), a child. Thus, the two mighty houses of Ancient Valyria would be united. Both are clear: with Daemon ruling Dragonstone, the Fattening Crab running wild, the appointment of Rhaenyra, a woman !, as heir, and the lack of a queen make Viserys a weak king.
The house of the dragon it is steeped in politics. A ruler cannot be cruel, but he cannot appear fragile either. Viserys is a good man, who tries to do the right thing and to be right, without starting unnecessary struggles and wars. But he is seen as weak. He then decides to follow the advice and remarry. He even gets Rhaenyra’s approval, which she understands is his duty to him. But then Viserys announces that he is about to marry Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey). She, at the behest of her father, continued to visit the king in her rooms. In one blow, he injures his daughter and starts a war with Corlys and Rhaenys. This makes it difficult to defend you, my king.
For those expecting battles and fights, the second episode was tepid. But those who love this universe also because of family and palace intrigues will be satisfied.
– Who thinks Daemon is going to be a good guy now? Nobody. He is the agent of chaos and now, in alliance with the proud Lord Corlys Velaryon, he will cause more havoc in the realm of Viserys.
– Notable quote: “Parents don’t know the girls’ language,” Alicent tells Rhaenyra, encouraging her friend to take the initiative to talk to Viserys. Even though she is her heir, the king is not doing a good job of comforting her and preparing her for the throne.
– The award for the best dialogue, on the other hand, goes to Rhaenys and Rhaenyra. “I understand the order of things. I don’t know if you have the same understanding,” Rhaenys begins. In the best spirit of Daenerys, Rhaenyra says, “When I am queen, I will change the order.” Rhaenys warns that the king will remarry, have more children and one of them could be a man and take the throne from Rhaenyra. Rhaenys remembers that the council once had a chance to change the order but didn’t. And he warns: “Men would rather set fire to the kingdom than put a woman on the Iron Throne.”
– Rhaenys looks like a bitter woman for being ignored, but she’s right. Just watch the episode. Rhaenyra challenges Uncle Daemon, but she continues to pour wine to the men. Alicent will be forced to marry a much older man, the father of her best friend. Misarya (Sonoya Mizuno) was used by Daemon to try to lure her brother to Dragonstone. And little Laena almost became queen at 12.
– They are almost all at the mercy of the second-born, resentful of not being the first-born: Corlys Velaryon, Daemon Targaryen, Otto Hightower. Men left behind, willing to do anything to prove their worth and keep their pride intact, are dangerous.
