This week comes the Prime Video series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. That’s why Olhar Digital has brought a guide to the long-awaited production, which is the most expensive TV series in history.
With Amazon looking for a franchise to call their own, Prime Video acquired the television rights to JRR Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and chose to develop a prequel set well before what was known in the Peter Jackson trilogy.
The series has divided the opinions of fans of “The Lord of the Rings”, who will finally be able to see the result of the millionaire production.
Cast and crew
Before we talk about the series itself, we meet the cast and crew of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”.
The series has a very diverse cast, with people of different nationalities. Morfydd Clark will play Galadriel, the protagonist of the series. The Great King Gil-galad will be played by Benjamin Walker, while Robert Aramayo will play the young Elrond and Charles Edwards will play Celebrimbor. Another elf relevant to the series’ history is Arondir, a forest elf played by Ismal Cruz Cordova.
Númenor will be an important region of Middle-earth for the series. There, Cynthia Addai-Robinson will play the regent queen Míriel, while Tystan Gravelle will play Pharazôn, who will challenge the queen. Charlie Vickers will play Halbrand, an original character who will join Galadriel in the search for him to locate Sauron.
Daniel Weyman will join Hairyfoot as The Stranger, who according to one theory could end up being a version of Sauron himself.
the story of the series
Fans of “The Lord of the Rings” who have read Tolkien’s work have an idea of what themes the series will address. As it takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth, “The Rings of Power” is known to face the rise and fall of Sauron.
But it is not known exactly what will happen in the series. This era in question spanned some 3500 years of Middle-earth history, so the series should condense this timeline to show a unified history. What is also known is that Galadriel will be the protagonist of the series, on a mission to hunt down Sauron and seek revenge for the death of her brother.
Meanwhile, a shape-shifting Sauron causes trouble far and wide, including infiltrating Númenor and eventually corrupting Pharazôn. He will recruit allies and will have to spend time among the Hairyfeet, one of the ancestors of the Hobbits, whom we meet thousands of years later.
On the other hand, the Dwarves will be in search of mithril metal, Arrondir and Bronwyn will live a forbidden love story.
References
The series is based on “The Lord of the Rings”, so it should carry several references to Tolkien’s books. It is already known that there will be a sea monster in the series, which could end up being one of the Nameless Beings. Another important reference is the discovery of mithril by Durin IV and other dwarves in Khazad-dum, indicating Durin’s Scourge.
However, the most anticipated references by Tolkien fans must be the allusions to the classic tale “Ballad of Leithian”. In it, a man named Beren entered the Quest for the Silmaril. Although successful, the research ended poorly for everyone involved. Finrod was killed in the dungeons of Sauron by a werewolf and, apparently, his death will be the catalyst for Galadriel to join his hunt for Sauron.
