House of the Dragon: Milly Alcock reveals what shocked her about the series

Actress Milly Alcock plays the protagonist of “House of the Dragon”, Rhaenyra Targaryen, in her younger stage. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alcock recounted the process of getting the role of her and described her biggest shock with the series.

The 22-year-old Australian actress revealed that she auditioned several “House of the Dragon” via Zoom, reading lines from a mysterious character whose name was simply “YR”. Although she had never seen “Game of Thrones”, Alcock knew this was a great opportunity and she received the news that she had landed the part of her at a friend’s house.

“I got the call and obviously I couldn’t tell anyone and fell to the ground,” the actress told THR. “I asked my friend if he had any wine and I don’t know why. He thought something really terrible had happened. It was like: someone is sick, someone is dead, something catastrophic has happened. I couldn’t tell anyone for so long. “

But the biggest surprise for the actress may not have been getting the role, but its size. It’s just that Alcock believed that the younger version of Rhaenyra would only appear in a few flashbacks, and not that she would be the focus of the series for much of the first season, until Emma D’Arcy takes over for the rest of the series. .

“I was surprised,” she said, at the size of her role on the show. “I was really shocked.” So, after the “Game of Thrones” marathon, Milly Alcock went to London, where the “House of the Dragon” set was located, and she discovered a gigantic set.

“It felt like I was literally captured in Australia and someone had just left me in the middle of the ocean with nothing around,” she said. “I did Australian television, where our entire program budget is less than one episode. [de ‘House of the Dragon’]. I’ve never been on a hundred million dollar set like that before. So there was a lot of responsibility in having to carry Rhaenyra, and it was interesting because Rhaenyra and I have had similar trajectories in our history – how we navigated an unexpected world that we really hoped to find ourselves in and learned to deal with those challenges. “.

In addition to recounting his journey to get to the role of Rhaenyra and his surprise with the shooting set, Alcock revealed a curiosity about the production: “Since there is no electricity in this world, everything is lit by fire”, Alcock says. “So all the lighting you see on the show would have people showing up and setting everything on fire and the set would get incredibly hot. I’d get really sweaty and look like this (she reaches out) with two girls with hairdryers. So it was all very fascinating. “

Despite getting close to Emily Carey, who plays the young Alicent Hightower, and Fabian Frankel who plays Ser Criston Cole, Milly Alcock was put off by the showrunners from approaching Emma D’Arcy, who plays the older Rhaenyra.

“Emma and I used to say, ‘Let’s meet,’” recalls Alcock. “We wanted to have a meeting with [o diretor Miguel Sapochnik] and discuss Rhaenyra’s progression as a character. And Miguel didn’t want us to meet, which was very interesting! So we never had that discussion. Michael said, “Just trust you two are capable.” I think he was aware that we would try to imitate each other. “

Additionally, Sapochnik, who is also the showrunner alongside Ryan Condal, also advised Alcock to rely on Rhaenyra’s stillness as a real figure. “She’s pretty stoic in the way she likes to present herself and I’m a pretty restless person,” he says. “AND [Ryan e Miguel] kept reminding me that there is strength in stillness. She doesn’t have to test herself, she has that status. “

Milly Alcock has received praise for her role in “House of the Dragon,” which will have another new episode this Sunday at 10pm on HBO and HBO Max. The first two episodes of the series are on HBO Max.
