“Tom Gun: Maverick” is starting to stream for rent, but it’s Tom Cruise’s 2017 film “The Mummy,” which has been a surprising hit on Netflix.
“The Mummy” seems to have gained new life on Netflix, with the free-form reboot of the eponymous trilogy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz having an unexpected success in streaming. The film follows Cruise, who plays a soldier digging an ancient tomb with the Egyptian princess Ahmanet.
Then he and his partner, played by Jake Johnson, accidentally release his spirit to the present day. Alongside Cruise in the lead role are Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe.
Released in 2017, “The Mummy” only has a 15% critical approval score on Rotten Tomatoes and the listening performance isn’t that much higher, at 35%. These numbers place the film as the second lowest-scoring film of Tom Cruise’s career, behind 1988’s “Cocktail”.
The initial idea was that the film would usher in a new Universal Pictures cinematic universe known as the Dark Universe. But, with the poor performance of critics, audiences and box office, the project was scrapped.
Despite all of this, it might be surprising that the current performance of the film on Netflix. “The Mummy” climbed Netflix’s top 10 streaming viewers. In the UK the film took third place in the last week, while in Brazil it reached the eighth place among the most viewed films.
Coincidentally, “Top Gun: Maverick” is starting to arrive on streaming rentals, while Tom Cruise’s “The Mummy” has been a hit and is available on Netflix.
