Passionate love for Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lyndon with Claire Danes in her new film, made in French, Avec amour et acharnement. This drama, in theaters, adapted from Christine Angotti’s novel, was written while incarcerated in 2020.
What is it about?
It’s Paris and it’s already winter. Sarah and Jean love each other, they have been living together for several years. It is love that makes them happy and strong. They trust each other. Desire never fades. One morning, Sarah runs into Francois, her former lover, this Francois, who introduces her to Jean, this Francois, whom she unhesitatingly leaves for Jean.
A passionate love story rooted in Paris
Vincent Lyndon and Juliette Binoche love each other and destroy each other with love and ruthlessness in director Claire Denis’ new feature film (Beau Travail, Chocolat, High Life…), adapted from the book by novelist Christine Angot. Claire Danes is once again taking over the writing world.
This film exists thanks to the lock-in
Five years after The Beautiful Inner Sun, the original screenplay co-written with Christine Angott, Claire Danes adapts the novel in this case. A turning point in lifePublished in 2018 by Flammarion.
“Working with Christine was a little different this time“, the filmmaker points out with love and excitement in the press kit.”It was not about writing ex nihilo, but about adapting one of his novels. A turning point in life. In addition, and this is nothing, this project was formed at the very beginning of the pandemic.“
and add:Like many, we were confined at home, as if under house arrest. So Christine and I worked. It’s a little weird to say, but it’s true: this movie exists thanks to the lock-in.“
The pandemic is very present in the film. It is perfectly integrated into the everyday life of its characters, which we see wearing masks, or Juliette Binoche’s profession. He plays a journalist working for Radio France International and conducts interviews remotely, through intermediate screens, and where current topics are discussed.
“This is the making of a movie. For me, the script is always a soft material that gradually becomes stronger: silhouettes emerge from the fog, start moving, talking, taking shape…Claire Denis continues.
This is the making of a movie
But the main theme of the film is, of course, love (and the passions it can inspire): “It’s a simple story: Sarah is a woman living in a relationship with Jean. By chance she finds Francois, a former lover. But in both Christine’s novel and the film, this simplicity is unequivocal and avoids many clichés..”
and add:There is still an incredible and rare chance to find an ex-lover. He’s taking that chance, throwing that coin in the air, playing this dangerous game of heads or tails, and basically not caring where or how the coin lands, on which face. He is an adventurer in life, on the edge of a double-edged razor, as the original music by Stuart Staples says, and which in English is the title of the film: Both sides of the blade..” Again with Claire Danes, the music plays a prominent role, accompanying many of the film’s scenes.
Avec Amour et acharnement won Claire Denis the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival this winter. For the record, the filmmaker also won an award at the Cannes Film Festival, which concluded last May, for his next English-language film, Stars at Noon, which is set to release soon. The latter will be presented at the Deauville Festival, which will be held in early September.
