The kingdom was created in ancient China. The story follows young Shin on his way to fulfill his dream of becoming a great general. In this ancestral China, Xin hails from the state of Qin, which was plagued by many rebellions both within and outside the kingdom.
Indeed, the story takes place during the Warring States period, when China was divided between the seven kingdoms: Qin, Zhao, Han, Wei, Chu, Yan and Chi. Through Shin’s story, we also follow Ai Sei, the man who later became known as Qin Shi Huang, the unifier of China.
Now that Season 3 of this fabulous anime is available on ADN, it’s time to dive into the adventure!
If the animation of the first season can be disturbing, it is absolutely necessary to ignore this somewhat disappointing aspect in order to be captivated by this epic story. The series makes up for this graphical shortcoming with an engaging and very well-written narrative that focuses more on military strategies than epic battles.
Plus, it’s not every day we see a Japanese anime set in the heart of ancient China.
In addition, from season 2, a very clear improvement in the graphics restores the odyssey of an astonishing scale of all letters of his nobility. The Kingdom is adapted from a manga written and drawn by Yasuhisa Hara, a true phenomenon in the Land of the Rising Sun since its publication in 2006.
Season 1, dating back to 2011, was directed by Jun Kamiya (Blue Seed, Hikaru No Go) at Pierrot Studios (Bleach, Naruto). Akira Iwanaga (Bleach) took over for Season 2 in 2013, before giving way to Kenichi Imaizumi (Reborn) for Season 3 in 2020.
For the latter, studio Signpost, a subsidiary of Pierrot, took the reins, which added real value to the anime, catching up with the lackluster animation of previous seasons. With season 3, the studio covered the Coalition arc, which was considered the best part of the manga.
Highly anticipated by fans, this arc is the apotheosis of everything that makes the series salty, between political intrigue and epic battles. In addition to an excellent team of experienced directors, the anime was able to count on Hisashi Abe’s participation. Character designer Experienced Psycho-Pass from Sinners of the System and Berserk 2016.
Addictive and heavy, Kingdom is somewhat reminiscent of the raw violence of Ken Survivor and Game of Thrones, as well as the political intrigue of the latter. Between pure politico-tactical stories and occasional dark action, the anime will delight souls hungry for grandiosity and excitement.
This is a true war epic worthy of George RR Martin or Viking stories. Realm author Yasuhisa Hara has revealed that Game of Thrones has been a huge influence on him.
He spoke about this topic at a round table organized in Japan with the creators of the cult series, David Benioff and D.B. with Wei. This meeting was held for the film release of the live-action adaptation of Kingdom.
All four seasons of Kingdom are available on DNA.
