Miguel Sapochnik, showrunner of “House of the Dragon”, leaves the series

“House of the Dragon”, the “Game of Thrones” prequel series, has just been renewed for a second season, but will not feature one of its showrunners, Miguel Sapochnik, who announced Wednesday (31) that he will be leaving the series.

The HBO fantasy series premiered its second episode last Sunday (28), and now receives a major backstage drop. According to The Hollywood reporterSapochnik is exiting production after three grueling years to make “House of the Dragon” a reality.

Co-creator and co-showrunner Ryan Condal will now be the solo showrunner of the series and will continue to work closely with the other co-creator and author of the series universe, George RR Martin. Sapochnik has just entered into a contract with HBO to develop new projects and will remain as an executive producer on the series.

“Working in the ‘Thrones’ universe over the past few years has been an honor and a privilege, especially having spent the last two years with the incredible cast and crew of ‘House of the Dragon’,” Sapochnik said in a statement. “I am very proud of what we have achieved with the first season and I am very happy with the enthusiastic reaction of our viewers,” he continued.

“It was incredibly difficult to decide to move forward, but I know it’s the right choice for me, personally and professionally. In doing so, however, I am deeply comforted to know that Alan will be joining the series. He is someone I have known and respected for a long time, and I believe this precious series could not be in safer hands. I am delighted to continue to be part of the HBO family and “House of the Dragon” and of course I wish Ryan and his team all the best for Season 2 and beyond, “concluded Sapochnik.

In response to Miguel Sapochnik’s departure, “House of the Dragon” has hired “Game of Thrones” veteran Alan Taylor, who will serve as director and executive producer, and is expected to direct more episodes of the second season.

“It is a pleasure and an honor to return to HBO, to delve into the world of Targaryen, and I look forward to working closely with Ryan as ‘House of the Dragon’ grows into its second season,” Taylor said in a Note . “Ryan, Miguel and George have launched an extraordinary story, in a rich and fascinating world. Returning to Westeros will be a huge undertaking and I am looking forward to the challenge. “

For its part, HBO said, “Miguel Sapochnik did an extraordinary job in the first season of House of the Dragon, establishing its distinctive look and feel. This series could not have happened as it did without him. Even if there would like Miguel to continue in the same role, we are thrilled to have his continued collaboration in this new creative ability. Looking ahead, we have a decade-long relationship with Alan Taylor and are delighted that he is joining Ryan and the rest of the talented team. “

This decision comes after the huge success of the first episodes, which led to the renewal of the series for a second season. In addition to directing episode 1, Sapochnik still has two more episodes that he directed for his season 1 debut: episodes 6 and 7.

Alan Taylor, on the other hand, has a long trajectory, which includes having worked on acclaimed series such as “The Sopranos”, “Mad Men” and “Rome”. In “Game of Thrones”, Taylor directed several iconic episodes, including the final two of the first season of the series.

The first two episodes of “House of the Dragon” are available on HBO Max. The remainder of the first season will follow the weekly preview schedule, again on Sundays at 10pm, on HBO and HBO Max.
