Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: The showdown between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson.
In 2009, Fast and Furious 4 proved to be the highest-grossing installment of the franchise that had begun eight years earlier, with a worldwide gross of $360 million. Director Justin Lin has agreed to helm the next film, due out in 2011. If its predecessor explored the concept of sacrifice, it is about freedom, always within the same family.
To maintain the success of the saga, producer Neil H. Moritz actually decides to bring together all the characters scattered over the previous four films, starting with the title: Vin Diesel. Absent from Fast 2 Furious and appearing on screen for only a few seconds in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift, the actor agrees to reprise his role.
For the first time, he answers to the rookie, Dwayne Johnson, who gives his opponent, the federal agent Luke Hobbs. Their confrontation, compared to that of rapper Ludacris between King Kong and Godzilla, culminates in a masterful fight scene choreographed by stunt coordinator Mike Gunter that took a week to film.
Thus, thanks to deep characters, a clever plot, spectacular chases that do not border on overdose, and a strong sense of rhythm, the famous action franchise matures. And that bet is more than up, as Fast and Furious 5 took in $626 million at the worldwide box office.
