“Aquaman” actor says acting in comic books is “clown’s job”

Several controversial opinions have already been issued about comic book adaptations to cinema and now an “Aquaman” actor has claimed that acting in this type of film is “clown’s job”.

The claim was made by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who starred in “Aquaman” in the role of Black Manta. The film was released in 2018 and became one of the biggest hits in the DC Extended Universe, hitting over $ 1 billion at the box office.

The film introduces Arthur Curry, the rightful heir to the throne of Atlantis, played by Jason Momoa. Aquaman goes on a mission to stop a war between land and ocean, and is the hero’s first solo film, which will return in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which was recently postponed.

In the film, Aquaman faces two main villains: Patrick Wilson’s Orm and Abdul-Mateen II’s David the Black Manta. The latter seeks revenge after his father was killed while trying to defeat Aquaman. Eventually, the two villains join forces and Orm provides David with the armor that makes him Black Manta.

In addition to “Aquaman”, Abdul-Mateen II is known to fans for his roles in “The Chicago Seven”, “Candyman” and “Ambulance”. Now, he comes back to the attention of DC fans for a statement made during an interview with Vulturein which he discussed the differences between acting in a comic adaptation, such as “Aquaman”, and other films with more serious themes.

“Everything must be aimed at arriving at the truth. But sometimes you have to know which movie or genre you are in. Something like ‘Aquaman’, it’s a clown job. “Aquaman” is not “The Chicago 7”. You have to overcome yourself. To survive and get it right, you have to play this game and then be smart when you want to surprise the audience, the director or yourself with a little “Wow, I didn’t expect to see a Chekhovian thing or August Wilson and Aquaman., But I have view'”.

Despite his character being defeated by Aquaman, a post-credits scene in the film already indicated the villain’s return. The character is expected to return in “Aquaman 2” and the actor has already commented on how Black Manta will be more developed in this new story.

“Aquaman” is available on HBO Max. The sequel is scheduled for December 25, 2023.
