Actor Bruno Gagliasso said he asked candomblecistas for permission to play a religious character in his new series, “Santo”, a Spanish Netflix production in which he shares the spotlight with Spaniard Raúl Arévolo. Like his character, the policeman Ernesto Cardona, Gagliasso also follows Candomblé and did not want to disrespect religion.

“I come from Candomblé, I have Oxóssi on my side, Exu has entered by force now. I asked for permission and it was very well received,” he revealed in an interview with Quem magazine.

Since one of the aspects of the character is his own religion, the series also had the advice of the researcher and father of Saint Anthony Arruda. “It was very important in this preparation with us, because we know the danger of a wrong, distorted or partial representation of religions of African origin,” said Vicente Amorim, director of the project.

In the storyline, Cardona begins the pursuit of an international drug dealer in Bahia and ends up in Spain, where he teams up with a local agent to try to catch the criminal, known as Santo, whom no one has ever been able to identify.

The starting point is a crime against a child, which hit Bruno Gagliasso, who has three children. The actor admits that some scenes were more difficult to do. “He was very moved, he moved me a lot. There was also a specific day when I felt bad, I cried a lot. I, usually when I build a character, I build from the inside. So, I feel [mesmo]”, he admitted.” There’s no way, I don’t know how to do it any other way, I don’t like it. So, she moved me a lot and in a specific scene I had a crisis. “

Gagliasso explained that he had made an intense preparation to live the role. “My preparation is based on truth, I use my feelings and what I have inside of me. It was visceral. I dare to say that Cardona was also one of the most important and intense characters of my life, not only in the preparation”, he described.

For this and for the details behind the scenes, the actor said he was proud of the series. “I am very proud to be doing a Spanish series, playing a Brazilian character, speaking Portuguese, being directed by a Brazilian director who makes stories in Japan, the United States, Brazil, as in the case of Vicente. Brazil does its job very well too. “.
