Munich on Arte: how Mathieu Kasowitz ended up in the film

How did Mate Kasowitz get into Steven Spielberg’s Munich casting? The director of ET just came to get him! To recall, Munich tells us how on the night of September 5, 1972, a commando of the Palestinian Black September organization entered the Olympic Village to shoot its two Israeli occupants and take nine others hostage.

Kasowitz explains the Belgian Robert, a maker of scale models and mechanical toys who became a specialist in mine clearance. At the time, the actor-director was believed to have abandoned his acting career after telling his agent not to call him again…except for filming with Spielberg. He told me years later Პirveli :

I have always had such amazing opportunities in my career. I found myself doing Munich with Spielberg, who is my living god. Not only that, but it makes me want to say an important line like, “We Jews cannot share with others what we have experienced ourselves.” It’s amazing, damn, the correlation between my personal life and what they give me in the movies.

In the Munich press kit, Kasowitz confided that he was immediately caught up in the script: “The script (…) blinded me with its construction, sophistication, power and courage. I think it’s a very intelligent film about the concept of revenge in general.”

Kasowitz’s passion for the American filmmaker is not really new, as he admired him since childhood:

“I was too young to see it in the cinema, but we recorded it on TV”recalls La Haine’s director jaw-droppingly. “I will find out at once Duel. My father tells me that these two films are structured in the same way. It opened my eyes to the fact that while they may be B-movies, they can also be seen as allegories of life, deeply metaphysical films at least as powerful as 2001.
