Tonight on TV: Unknown Classics of French Cinema

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: An adaptation of Henri La Barthe’s novel with Simone Signore.

In 1948, Yves Alegre brought Henri La Barthe’s novel Dédée d’Anvers to the big screen: the story of a prostitute living under the auspices of a spoiled pimp, hoping to survive with the sailor she fell in love with. Like Marcel Carne’s Quai des Mists, which was released in cinemas ten years earlier, the film perfectly recreates the atmosphere of the port of Antwerp, with its fog, bistros full of sailors or wet cobblestone streets. Thus, this adaptation joins the ranks of French film noir, with a bonus lead performance by Simone Signore.

Indeed, Dédée d’Anvers marks the beginning of his career. After a very cautious start on the big screen, appearing in films by Jean Boyer and Marcel Carne, she was discovered by the film Macadam. But it was Yves Alegre, her husband at the time, who gave her her first major roles in the 1940s, notably in Les Demons, and later Dede of Antwerpwhere he lends his features to the title role alongside Bernard Blier and Marcel Dalio.
