The much-anticipated series The Rings of Power finally aired its first two episodes on September 2nd, fulfilling a wait of several years!
Orcs, dwarves, elves, and other humans, the show features several people who meet, befriend, fight together, or come into conflict.
Of all the creatures that inhabit Middle-earth, the Pivelous have captivated the audience, especially thanks to the revelation of Markella Cavenagh, who plays the fiery Nori.
If fans of the works of JRR Tolkien already have the answer to this question, fans of the two trilogies directed by Peter Jackson will surely be surprised.
Why aren’t these forest creatures called Hobbits in the TV series? First of all, to answer this question, it is necessary to move the rings of power into the temporality of Lord of the Rings.
The story takes place 7,000 years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It deals with major events that took place in Middle-earth during the Second Age.
Thus we will be able to discover the history of the making of the Rings of Power, the history of the island kingdom of Númenor, the rise of Sauron and the last union of men and elves.
These events take place over several thousand years in Tolkien’s books. For purposes of the series, timelines are compressed. Thus hobbits as we know them in the Peter Jackson films do not form until the third age in the Shire.
Before that, these beings, also called “half-men”, lived in the valleys of the Anduin (a long river west of Middle-earth) and were divided into three tribes: the Fort, the Peablems, and the famous Pivelus. Therefore they are part of the hobbit family.
In the prologue of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien describes them as follows: “The Pivels were darker-skinned, shorter and shorter, wore neither beards nor boots; Their feet and hands were nimble and shapely, and they favored mountains and hills.’
As for hobbits, the author describes them as close to men: “It seems that indeed (even if they later became very distant) the Hobbits are related to us: they are much closer to us than the Elves, or even the Dwarves.
They once spoke human languages in their own way and had the same likes and dislikes as men. But the exact nature of this relationship can no longer be discovered. The appearance of hobbits goes back very far, to ancient times now lost and forgotten.
As seen in the series, the Woodworms hide from the outside world, staying away from the problems of other creatures living in Middle-earth. Well buried in the forest, they enjoy a simple life in osmosis with nature.
It is for this reason that the character of Elanor “Nori” Pievlu stands out from the rest of her tribe in her desire for adventure and emancipation. Together with his friend Poppy, they form a duo like the hobbits Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings.
After their encounter with a mysterious stranger who fell from the sky, what adventures await our two intrepid Pivelus? See you on September 9th on Amazon Prime Video for Episode 3 of The Rings of Power!
