The house of the dragonor House of the Dragontook a breath of fresh air in the third episode, which premiered yesterday on HBO and HBO Max. While the previous one was full of palace intrigue, in this one almost all of the scenes took place outside the Red Keep.

WARNING: The following text contains spoilers for the third episode of The house of the dragonwhich premiered yesterday on HBO and HBO Max. Read only after watching or proceed at your own risk.

Rhaenys (Eve Best) proved that good foresight does not require magical powers – if Melisandre (Carice van Houten) had half the Queen’s gaming vision that never was. The house of the dragonmany problems would have been avoided game of Thrones.

And it seems that Rhaenys doesn’t even appear in this chapter, in which veteran Miguel Sapochnik passed the wheel to Greg Yaitanes. He does a great job, starting with a sequence showing the Fat Crab action in Stepstone and the war that Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) fought there. Soon after, the dragon’s attack.

Shortly thereafter, it becomes clear that we are a few years ahead of the previous episode. Viserys I (Paddy Considine) shows once again that he is more interested in samba and Carnival than in the direction of the kingdom. With a goofy smile on his face, he celebrates Aegon’s second birthday, his crying son with Alicent (Emily Carey), who is already carrying another one in his womb. Rhaenys was right. And now?

Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) obviously isn’t happy with it. She disappears during the party, she refuses to go hunting. “Nobody came here because of me,” she says. She ends up going against her will of hers, only to realize that her father is trying to get her to marry a Lannister just as arrogant and far less glamorous than Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Be possessed. What Rhaenys told her years ago – to us in the previous episode – has stuck in her head. Rhaenyra, who well remembers her father’s obsession with her child, will now be replaced by a more acceptable heir to be a man. And other members of the court do not make her forget that there will always be a threat to her position.

Viserys I assures Rhaenyra that she will not be replaced as an heir. But after realizing that he hadn’t chosen the most suitable woman, but the one he liked best, Viserys tells Rhaenyra that he can choose her future husband. The fight scenes and dialogue between Considine and Alcock, by the way, are excellent.

The other part of the episode focuses on Daemon. Your war against the Fattening Crab is bad, despite your dragons. On Alicent’s advice, Viserys finally agrees to send help. But it seems Daemon wasn’t that needy. He pretends to surrender to the Fat Crab and leads a suicide attack in which he alone fights half an army.

It’s an impressive scene, reminiscent of the performance of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), her descendant, in hardhome. The battle ends bloody, with Daemon winning. It was a pretty quick fix to such a protracted war, but it’s one of those sequels that makes this the universe. game of Thrones.

– The saddest scene of the episode is the one in which Viserys is asked to kill a deer already captured and contained. He has a hard time getting off his horse, he can’t kill the animal in the first place. All in the name of an affirmation of man and king. Pathetic. And he knows it, in yet another Paddy Considine concert.

– The most beautiful scene is a counterpoint to this, when Rhaenyra and Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) find the white deer hunted by the king’s company, and she decides to admire it, without killing the animal.

– Rhaenyra seems to behave like a spoiled brat, but she knows her duty is to marry and have children. But she feels threatened, used and wants to choose who she will be her husband. The next few episodes will feature your choice.

– Alicent shows that she is quite unhappy, with motherhood, with marriage, with the pressure of her father, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) to get Viserys to change the heir to the throne. At all times, she tries to get close to Rhaenyra, obviously without success. The princess feels betrayed and she is right.

– A round of applause for the costumes, especially of Rhaenyra, with coats that mimic dragon scales.

– And, as always, what will be Daemon’s next step towards chaos?
