Writer Neil Gaiman, creator of “Sandman”, countered Elon Musk’s negative review of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon. In a tweet posted on Tuesday (6/9), Gaiman joked: “Elon Musk doesn’t ask me for advice on how to stop buying Twitter and I don’t come to him for movie, TV or literature reviews.”
The comment was Gaiman’s response to the billionaire’s brief negative comments about the series that hit Prime Video on Thursday night (9/1).
“Tolkien is turning in his grave,” Musk wrote in a first post, citing the author of the original “Lord of the Rings” books. And then he made his justification of him: “Almost every male character so far is a coward, an idiot, or both. Only Galadriel is brave, intelligent and understanding.”
Like all generalizations, the comment is not the truth, but it does take a spin on a misogynist and racist campaign against the series, which is echoed by Twitter trolls. In any case, Musk’s motivation is not that of an alleged Tolkien fan, but is the result of a feud with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has nothing to do with the series.
The fight between the two is due to the rivalry between Musk’s Space X and Bezos’s Blue Origin. The two space companies also sued in 2014, due to patent disputes and contracts with NASA. And the two have been fighting narrative wars ever since. In 2020, Musk even encouraged framing Amazon as a monopoly so that it would face sanctions from the US government.
Expecting the billionaire to praise an Amazon launch is like expecting Bolsonaro to praise Lula.
Regardless of Musk’s opinion, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is a hit for Prime Video, seen by over 25 million viewers on its first day. This represents the best performance ever for an Amazon original production. The eight-episode first season continues to be available on Friday on the platform, through October 14.
