
The American platform Hulu has announced the renewal of “The Handmaid’s Tale” for its sixth and final season, a few days before the premiere of the fifth year of production.
Based on Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name, released in Brazil as “O Conto da Aia”, the series shows a dystopian future as the fundamentalist far right takes power and creates a government, Gilead, which uses the Bible as a base. to remove all women’s rights and execute homosexuals. But June, a woman imprisoned and used as a “handmaid” by one of the leaders of the government to reproduce, begins a rebellion that threatens the stability of the patriarchy.
The fifth season, which will debut on September 18 in Brazil, will begin after the revenge of June (Elisabeth Moss), responsible for the murder of Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), and will reflect the reaction of the now widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), each increasingly antagonist.
As the widow takes advantage of the tragedy to gather followers across Canada, the former handmaid plans to return to Gilead as part of a guerrilla war aimed at overthrowing the extremist government. But she too becomes a prime target of the hatred of her enemies.

Despite the announced end of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, Margaret Atwood’s universe will remain alive thanks to the development of a spin-off. Producer Bruce Miller is adapting “The Testaments”, the literary continuation of “The Handmaid’s Tale”.
The plot of “The Testaments” takes place 15 years after the end of the original book and is narrated by three female characters. One of them is an old acquaintance of “The Handmaid’s Tale” fans, the terrible Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd in the series). The other two are new: a young woman raised in Gilead’s repressive society and a Canadian who discovers she was born there.
There is still no release date for “The Testaments” or for the final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale”.
