Weird: The story of Al Yankovic The Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival opened, with hopeful members of the public lining up two hours before the midnight screening, some in their finest Hawaiian-print shirts and curly wigs. There were also at least two accordions waiting in line.
Weirdthat “Weird Al” Yankovic wrote with director Eric Appel (Brooklyn nine nine, Silicon Valley) and producer Daniel Radcliffe star in a subversive version of Yankovic, seen shirtless in the trailer between a whiskey drinking scene and Madonna’s (played by Evan Rachel Wood) accordion riffs.
The film is a full remake of a fake trailer released by Funny or Die over a decade ago, starring Aaron Paul as Al and Olivia Wilde as Madonna. At the premiere, Appel compared the feature film to other musical biographies. rocket manas much as forest gum s dance night.
The raucous display had the audience singing and cheering as Yankovic’s songs appeared on the screen, including “I Love Rocky Road” and “Amish Paradise”. After the screening, Yankovic (wearing a Hawaiian print T-shirt), Appel, Yankovic, Wood and Radcliffe took the stage at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theater to a standing ovation.
Later Weird Premiering with Radcliffe dressed as Yankovic and holding an accordion, the film was highly anticipated. “It was a very simple conversation,” Radcliffe said of agreeing to perform the singer-songwriter parody.
On screen, Radcliffe plays Yankovic’s favorite instrument well. “I did what I could,” laughed the actor. “It’s a very heavy instrument.” While preparing the film, Radcliffe received video lessons via email from Yankovic, which he said would “treat me for the rest of my life”.
“And I had to be next to him in the trailer while he practiced,” Wood said, drawing a lot of laughter from the audience. But Woody wasn’t the only one who embraced his musical style. “About a month passed between learning the ‘My Bologna’ verse and singing it, so my girlfriend was living in eternal hell,” Radcliffe said.
The film features Yankovic’s original music during the end credits, during which he sings the song that belonged to Oscar. The Grammy winner noted that they are currently in negotiations with record companies to release the film’s soundtrack, including the original score. When asked if there would be a sequel to the show, Yankovic replied, “I think there should be.”
