Omar Sy to play first black samurai for Netflix!

Nothing can stop Omar Sai. After signing a new project deal with Netflix, the actor landed his first role in Yasuke, a live-action adaptation of the animated series of the same name, which is also available on the platform.

The Lupine and the Untouchables star will play a rare role: a slave who becomes Japan’s first black samurai. This person really existed and was raised as a true legend in the history of Japan.

The five-episode series will be produced by Omar Sy himself, as well as Sean Levy – who also produced Stranger Things – and actor Forest Whitaker. Scripts for the episodes will be written by Nick Jones Jr., who is already the author of the animated version.

If the animated series flirts with fantasy, this new reading will be a more faithful adaptation of the true story of the samurai. The show will focus on his friendship with military leader Oda Nabunaga. The latter is known as the first warrior to use firearms in Japan.

In a press release he shared The Hollywood ReporterOmar Sai explains:Yaske has inspired me for a long time. With this great team we will create a great series about what it means to be an African samurai in Japanese history. The action sequences promise to be phenomenal and ingenious.”

The Yasuke adaptation adds to Omar Sy’s long list of upcoming projects. Although he recently filmed Lupine season 3, which is slated for Netflix, he will also star in the remake of John Woo’s action classic The Killer. A film planned on the Peacock platform.
