Actors John Cena (“Peacemaker”) and Zac Efron (“Flames of Vengeance”) are in talks to star in the comedy “Ricky Stanicky”, which will be directed by Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”). The information was disclosed by Farrelly himself, in an interview with Deadline.
The screenplay was written by Jeff Bushell (“Lost to the Dog”) and follows a group of friends who come up with a character to use as an excuse for their bad behavior. If, for example, they drink too much and crash their car, they take no responsibility. Instead, they say they lent the car to a “Ricky Stanicky”.
The problem is, wives are starting to wonder why they never met this mystery guy. So friends hire someone to play this Stanicky for a day. But the plan works so well that they no longer want to get rid of the fake Ricky Stanicky.
If negotiations continue, Cena is expected to play the title character. “His timing is flawless, and it’s amazing for a guy his size,” Farrelly said. “He looks like a kid. His sense of humor is more self-deprecating than is common for boys of his size.”
Efron’s role has yet to be revealed, but it can be assumed that he is one of the husbands taking on the character of Cena.
Filming on “Ricky Stanicky” is expected to begin in early 2023, but there is no premiere date yet.
The film will mark the director’s return to the bleak comedies that Farrelly made early in his career, such as “Dumb & Dumb: Two Idiots in Trouble” (1994), “Kingpin: These Crazy Bowling Kings” (1996), “Who Will you stay with Mary? ” (1998) and “Me, Myself and Irene” (2000), all directed in collaboration with his brother, Bobby Farrelly.
Peter Farrelly recently directed the film “The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” also starring Efron, which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and will arrive on the Apple TV + streaming service on September 30th.
John Cena has several projects in the pipeline, including the action films “Project X-Traction”, starring Jackie Chan (“Rush Hour”), and “Argylle”, directed by Matthew Vaughn (“King’s Man: Inception”), without forget the second season of “The Peacemaker”. None of these productions have a preview date.
In addition to “Operation Beer”, Zac Efron will also appear in the remake of “Three Men and a Baby” (1987), developed for the Disney + streaming service. The film also doesn’t have a release date.
