Disney announced the official title and unveiled the logo of the new film “The Lion King” during D23, the studio’s convention Friday-Sunday (September 11) at Disneyland.
Titled “Mufasa: The Lion King”, the film will be a prologue directed by Barry Jenkins, director of the Oscar-winning “Moonlight”.
Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 film, returns to the role in the sequel, which will be produced in the same photorealistic animation style as the first film, directed by Jon Favreau.
The plot will focus on the early years of Mufasa, Simba’s father, whose death forms the emotional heart of classic animation and its remake.
At D23, it was also revealed that actor Aaron Pierre (“Time”) will voice the young Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“Elvis”) will voice Taka, who is not a new character, but the real name of Scar, Mufasa’s evil brother.
The most recent version of “The Lion King” was a huge box office success for Disney, grossing over $ 1.6 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing Walt Disney Studios production (i.e., by a non-Marvel, Pixar or Lucasfilm production) at all times. The vocal cast included pop star Beyoncé, Donald Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The first of the prologue was scheduled for 2024.
