The media dynasty drama “Succession” and comedy “Ted Lasso” won top Emmy trophies Monday and a “Round 6” actor won a major acting award at the Hollywood Ceremony for Television.
“Succession” was named Best Drama Series, an award won by the HBO series in 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic halted its production schedule. The series, which has garnered four trophies in total, tells the story of the Roy family in a struggle for power.
The Apple TV + series “Ted Lasso” is also a repeat winner, winning the Best Comedy Award for the second consecutive year for its history of a football manager at the helm of a British football team. Its stars Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein were winners for the second time for Best Comedian and Supporting Actor.
Likewise, voters honored “Euphoria” star Zendaya as Best Dramatic Actress and Jean Smart from “Hacks” as Best Comedy Actress. It was the second win for each of these categories.
A newcomer was Lee Jung-jae, who was named Best Drama Actor for his role in the South Korean thriller “Round 6”. The dystopian story about cash-strapped competitors risking their lives for wealth became a global sensation after being posted on Netflix a year ago.
The actor thanked the “Round 6” crew for “bringing to life the realistic problems we all have to tackle on screen in such a creative way.”
The night’s most award-winning series was HBO’s “The White Lotus”. She has won 10 awards, including Best Limited Series and Acting Trophies for Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett. These victories helped HBO and the HBO Max streaming service lead the group with 38 overall awards.
