The Emmy Awards ceremony took place on Monday evening (12) and the South Korean Netflix series “Round 6” made history again.

Prior to this year’s awards, no non-English language production had won – or been nominated – in a major award category. But “Round 6” changed things, made history and took home not just one, but two main categories at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

The story was made in the categories of Outstanding Actor in a drama series, with the victory of Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun and also became the first Asian actor to win an Emmy; and Best Director in a Drama Series, for which Hwang Dong-hyuk took home the award.

With streaming competition increasingly intense, unprecedented victories like the Netflix series can help the company draw more attention to its catalog. The first Emmy nomination for a Netflix series came in 2013, and in 2021, the stream won more awards than any other service or channel.

“Round 6” was an unprecedented global phenomenon long before the Emmy win, with the South Korean thriller about a dystopian competition for survival becoming a huge global hit last year.

Netflix names “Round 6” as the most watched show ever released on the platform, including productions in all languages, with 1.65 billion hours watched in the first four weeks of the series’ airing.

The first season of “Round 6” is available to stream on Netflix. A second season of the Korean series has already been announced, but there is no release date yet.
