Netflix has released a new poster and subtitled trailer for “The School for Good and Evil”, which combines fairy tales and modern visual effects.

Based on Soman Chainani’s children’s bestseller, the film follows two best friends, Sophie and Agatha, as they enter a school where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. With her princess ambitions, Sophie believes she will be chosen for Escola do Bem to join the ranks of alumni like Cinderella and Snow White. Meanwhile, Agatha’s dark appearance seems to naturally fit the School of Evil villains. But the girls’ fortunes are reversed, with Sophie falling to the School of Evil and Agatha to the School of Good, testing their friendship.

The cast highlights Kerry Washington (from the “Scandal” series) and Charlize Theron (from the “Scandal” movie) as teachers of this type of Hogwarts fairy tale at the School for Good and School for Evil respectively. The young protagonists are played by Sophia Anne Caruso (“Jack of Hearts”) and Sofia Wylie (“High School Musical: The Series: The Musical”), as Sophie and Agatha.

The adaptation was written by David Magee, who wrote “Life of Pi” (2016) and Disney’s upcoming live-action version of “The Little Mermaid”, and is directed by Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids’ Mission honor”).

The premiere will take place on 21 October.
