A video circulating on social media collected the reactions of several black children to the teaser of the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid”. And draws attention to the emotion expressed by the girls when they discover that, in the film, Ariel is as black as they are.
The official teaser was made available last weekend and in its first 24 hours it was viewed over 104 million times, according to Disney. As a result, it passed several trailers for studio hits, such as the films “Beauty and the Beast” (94 million) and “Aladdin” (74 million).
Despite the many racist comments against choosing a non-white actress to represent the mermaid, the video showed the power of the representation for children who felt reflected in the image of the enchanted character. Phrases like “she’s brown just like me” and “I want to see” set records.
The preview of “The Little Mermaid” ends with a musical showcase of the new version of “Part of Your World”, which explores all the vocal talent of Halle Bailey (from the “Grown-ish” series), the interpreter of the new Ariel .
The cast of the film also includes Melissa McCarthy (“Ghostbusters”), Jonah Hauer King (BBC miniseries “Little Women”), Jacob Tremblay (“Extraordinary”), Awkwafina (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), Daveed Diggs (“Express of Tomorrow”) and Javier Bardem (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge”).
Directed by Rob Marshall (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) and the final version of the script was written by David Magee. Both worked together on 2018’s “Mary Poppins Returns”.
Composer Alan Menken, winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Song for his 1980s Disney cartoon, is also involved in the project, working with Lin-Manuel Miranda (another from “Mary Poppins Returns”) on the new soundtrack.
“The Little Mermaid” will be released in May 2023.
