Actor David Harbor, “Stranger Things” Sheriff Hopper, will star in the movie “Gran Turismo”, based on the popular racing game franchise.
Developed for PlayStation, “Gran Turismo” games are hyper-realistic, with real-world vehicles designed to mimic the look and performance of real cars.
The franchise began in 1997 and spawned seven official games, as well as several spinoffs, selling 85 million units worldwide.
However, the film will not be a direct adaptation of the games. Instead, he will tell the true story of a teenage “Gran Turismo” gamer whose gaming skills have seen him win a series of Nissan races and become a true professional racing driver.
Harbor’s role has not been revealed, but it must be that of the protagonist’s father.
The screenplay was written by Jason Hall (“American Sniper”) and Zach Baylan (“King Richard: Raising Champions”), and Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) will direct.
“Gran Turismo” will be produced by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation’s production division, and the Columbia studio.
“As one of PlayStation’s oldest and most beloved franchises, it’s great to partner with Columbia Pictures again to bring ‘Gran Turismo’ to life in an exciting way,” Qizilbash said in a statement. “We can’t wait for the public to see Neill’s vision of this true and inspiring story of a player turned professional driver.”
The first was scheduled for 11 August 2023.
David Harbor will also soon be seen in the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things”, still without a release date, and in the Marvel movie “Thunderbolts”, due out in July 2024.
