Netflix’s upcoming war movie “Nothing New on the Front” began receiving critical acclaim following its world premiere this Monday (12) at the Toronto Film Festival.
Critics describe the German film directed by Edward Berger as “heartbreaking”, “fantastic” and a “chilling piece of antiwar cinema”. “Nothing New on the Front” follows young German soldier Paul, whose euphoria from fighting in World War I quickly turns to fear as he and his comrades are sent into the war trenches.
The film is based on the book of the same name by the German writer Erich Maria Remarque, a classic when it comes to works of war. The story is based on real events and will star Paul Felix Kammerer, as well as Albrecht Schuch, Moritz Klaus and Daniel Brühl.
: “’Nothing New on the Front’ tells the moving story of a young German soldier during the First World War. In the trenches, fighting for their lives, Paul and his colleagues experience firsthand how the initial euphoria of war turns into despair and fear. Director Edward Berger’s film is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s best-seller of the same name.
The cast of “Nothing New on the Front” wowed critics, with the crew receiving just as much praise. Pete Hammond of Deadline magazine wrote: “It’s amazing that it hasn’t been done before, but now it’s made with a film that looks very polished thanks to the fine photography by James Friend, the art design by Christian M. Goldbeck and a great soundtrack. . sound by Volker Bertelmann. Sven Budelmann’s editing is also excellent, and even at 147 minutes this thing moves. “
Marya E. Gates of The Playlist also talked about the work. “Berger and her team have created a faithful and moving adaptation that fully realizes the novel’s incisive anti-war themes,” she said, suggesting that the film “finds beauty in bloodshed.” She also says it’s hard not to compare this version to Lewis Milestone’s 1930 adaptation, “No New on the Front,” which won an Oscar for Best Picture. “It’s crazy that it took nearly 100 years for a German adaptation, given that it’s the novel’s country of origin.”
Similarly, Sarah Millner describes the film as “dark” and “beautiful” for Slash Film, while Screen Daily’s Fionnuala Halligan states: “‘Nothing New’ is extremely realistic: strikingly staged battle sequences with sounds of conflict follow. that turn into a cinematic bombing. With Ukraine’s brutal struggle for territory, Berger brings home the message of all war films in the simplest and most direct way: the cost in human lives, yes, but also our collective humanity “.
“Nothing New on the Front” has already been nominated for a German Oscar in the Best International Film category. The war movie arrives on Netflix on October 28th.
