The Killer Nurse Inspires Netflix Movie “Night Nurse”

Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne work together for the first time in a serial killer film

the careers of Jessica Chastain And Eddie Redmayne they were, perhaps, always on a collision course. Their red-haired, fair-skinned looks have long been compared. At the 2017 Golden Globes, when they performed together, the presenter Jimmy Fallon he called them singing “Chastain and the Redmayne” to the beat of Insane in the membraneby Cypress Hill.

Since they met at a children’s film festival in Italy years ago, they too have been friends. Even if at times they bordered on rivalry. “Too bad we didn’t work together on The Danish Girl (2015), because everyone is always talking about how similar we are,” says Chastain. “I took a picture of him dressed as the female character and emailed Eddie saying, ‘Stop taking my papers, (swear word) ‘. “

The night nurse brings Chastain and Redmayne together on screen for the first time. It’s a clever and chilling real-life drama revolving around the case of Charles Cullen, an East Coast hospital nurse who has killed at least 29 patients. The film is directed by Tobias Lindholm and adapted by screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, The Last Night in Soho) from the 2013 book by Charles Graeber, The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder.

Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a single mother nurse from New Jersey who befriends Cullen (Redmayne) after being hired. In an interview together in a Toronto hotel prior to the film’s premiere, their easily visible chemistry in the film was even more expansive in person. “We play like friends,” says Chastain, placing too much emphasis on “play”. “It has been difficult.”

“It was a joy,” Redmayne smiles, making Chastain laugh and sigh, “He can’t even pretend.”

The film, which Netflix will hit theaters on October 19 and stream a week later, is not just about a stealth serial killer, but about the for-profit healthcare system that has allowed him to go unnoticed for so long. Nnamdi Asomugha and Noah Emmerich star in the role of police investigators.

“For me, the script was a complex story, a blend of this very intimate friendship, a story of heroism for Jessica’s character, Amy,” says Redmayne. “But in a way it questioned a system and how it worked or failed.”

the idea of The night nurse was born several years ago, but Lindholm, who has written screenplays for several Thomas Vinterberg films (including the Academy Award Druk – One more round And Hunting), has committed to shooting a long Danish miniseries, The investigation, about the death of 30-year-old Swedish journalist Kim Wall. The actors discussed their options and decided to wait for Lindholm.

“We had a lot of conversations before we even started. So we knew what we wanted from the film and we couldn’t wait,” says Lindholm. “We came with an extremely caring and loving energy. The three of us would be the centerpiece. My idea was to create this film together.”

“They are a dream, both of them,” he adds. “These are actors who look alike, with the same mood, the same energy. Yet they are so different.”

For Chastain, 45, and Redmayne, 40, to do The night nurse it came with some apprehension. Working with friends, they note, can mean seeing a different side of someone. Redmayne’s character is also a deeply damaged person who takes on a kind and warm facade. Redmayne’s slightly deflated physicality The night nurse It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done.

“I respect the fact that he doesn’t have to torture other people around him to believe in his performance,” says Chastain, who adds that he respects any actor’s trial.

The night nurse is Chastain’s first film since winning the Best Actress Oscar earlier this year for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”. The promotions highlighted that the two protagonists of the film are Oscar winners; Redmayne won the best actor award for Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” in 2014.

“I have to say that when I saw the movie trailer, I concluded that the experience worked,” says Chastain.

“This is the best feeling,” Redmayne replies. “Why don’t you really believe it when it happens.”

Chastain already had such a superstition about holding an Oscar that he once refused to touch Redmayne’s award. “But now,” he says laughing, “I keep your Oscar and you can keep mine.”
