Director Ridley Scott (“Casa Gucci”) will produce the “Blade Runner 2099” series, made official this Thursday (15/9) by the Amazon Prime Video streaming service.
The project will mark the director’s return to the “Blade Runner” universe after directing the classic “Blade Runner: The Android Hunter” (1982) and producing the sequel, “Blade Runner 2049” (2017), directed by Denis. .
The project was first mentioned in November last year by Ridley Scott himself, who provided few details at the time, but said the pilot was already fully written.
Created by Silka Luisa (“Illuminated”), who will also produce the attraction, “Blade Runner 2099” will take place 50 years after the events described in the Villeneuve film.
“The original ‘Blade Runner’, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science fiction films of all time and we are thrilled to introduce ‘Blade Runner 2099′ to our global Prime Video clients,” said Vernon. Sanders, head of Amazon Studios’ global television division, in an official statement. “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the ‘Blade Runner’ franchise and are confident that, with the combination of Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions and the incredible talent of Silka Luisa, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ will retain the intellect, spirit and spirit of his previous films “.
The first “Blade Runner” is an adaptation of a short story by writer Philip K. Dick and takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles, where synthetic humans, known as replicants, are created to work in space colonies. When a group of replicants escape back to Earth, a police officer (played by Harrison Ford) takes on the task of hunting them down and destroying them.
The sequel, “Blade Runner 2049,” follows a replicant (played by Ryan Gosling) who uncovers a secret that threatens to destabilize society. The film brought actor Harrison Ford back to life and also had the addition of Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Jared Leto (“Suicide Squad”).
So far, it is unknown if any of the actors involved in the previous films will return to the series or if the attraction will tell a new story, as did the animation “Blade Runner: Black Lotus”, from the Adult Swim channel.
“Blade Runner 2099” does not yet have a shooting schedule or release date set.
The new series will be the second Scott-directed feature to be adapted for streaming. “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley has been developing an “Alien” series for the Hulu platform for over a year, also produced by Scott Free, the director’s production company.
Ridley Scott is currently involved in the post-production of “Napoleon” (produced under the working title “Kitbag”), a biopic about the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte starring Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), which is yet to be released.
