Prime Video confirms the “Blade Runner” live-action series.

Ridley Scott’s series “Blade Runner 2099”, a sequel to the 2017 film “Blade Runner 2049”, has received the green light from Prime Video and will be officially produced by Amazon.

In 1982, Ridley Scott created the adaptation of the book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick, with the film “Blade Runner – The Android Hunter”. The film divided audiences at the time and performed poorly at the box office, but over time it was recognized as one of the best science fiction films in history.

Some 35 years later, Denis Villeneuve brought the story back in “Blade Runner 2049,” a film starring Ryan Gosling as the K. The film was a critical success, but didn’t do as well at the box office.

After “Blade Runner 2049”, a prequel to the character of Furiosa began to be developed and interest was born in expanding the franchise to the TV format. After HBO Max’s animated series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus,” information emerged that Scott would develop the franchise’s first live-action series.

In early 2022, Prime Video began airing as a location for the production of the series, and a team of writers, led by Silka Luisa, was hired to define whether the “Blade Runner 2099” series would take off. .

Now the magazine Deadline revealed that Prime Video has decided to move forward with production on the series, which will be a sequel to “Blade Runner 2049”, with Ridley Scott taking on the role of executive producer of the miniseries. Denis Villeneuve, director of the 2017 film, is not involved in the project, but the title already confirms that the story will take place 50 years after the film.

The green light for the “Blade Runner” series marks yet another effort by Prime Video in an attempt to bring great franchises to its platform. Previously, Prime Video acquired the rights to another Warner Bros. franchise, “The Lord of the Rings”, and is developing the “Rings of Power” series, which has already won three episodes on the platform and already has a second season. under processing.

The ploy so far has proved successful and has resulted in Prime Video releasing ratings for the first time, with the first two episodes elevating the series to the platform’s most watched state, according to Amazon.

With this early success, it’s no surprise that Prime Video is looking to add more great franchises to its original production catalog. And with the first season of “The Rings of Power” having a budget in excess of $ 400 million, making it the most expensive series in history, the “Blade Runner” series should have no problem making a big budget. .

It is unclear, however, how much the series will tie into the events of “Blade Runner 2049”. Ryan Gosling’s character K will certainly not return, and with 50 years gone by in the future, there may not be many familiar characters.

There is still no date for the premiere, nor for the start of production of “Blade Runner 2099”, but the expectation is that the series will become reality through Prime Video. 1982’s “Blade Runner” is available on HBO Max, while “Blade Runner 2049” can be seen on Netflix.
