Warning, this article contains spoilers for Episode 3 of Rings of Power
In Episode 3 of Rings of Power, which aired last week, we discovered the island of Numenor, and more specifically the city of Armenelos.
Shipwrecked Galadriel and Halbrand were rescued by Elendil’s ship and its crew. They then met with Queen Regent Miriel.
After several skirmishes with the Elves, the Sovereign finally agrees to trust Galadriel to send troops to Middle-earth to eradicate the growing evil in the southern lands.
But before that, Miriel wants to show him the vision that haunts him, the fall of NĂºmenor, beneath the waves. For this, two women go to a special room, where a spherical object stands, resting on a pedestal and covered with mist.
The queen opens it and reveals the palantir, a kind of dark colored crystal stone. Lord of the Rings fans will be reminded of this object by Saruman’s character who wielded this “vision stone”, Ortank.
It is retrieved by Gandalf, who orders you never to touch it or look at it, as the latter is inhabited by very powerful magic. Of course, Pippin won’t listen to him and takes the sphere while the witch is asleep in The Return of the King, failing to cause disaster.
In Episode 4 of Rings of Power, Miriel explains to Galadriel that she was once the 7 Vision Stone. Six were lost or hidden, and this one was given to his father. The Sovereign then invites Galadriel to lay her hand on the sphere.
The Elf then sees a vision of NĂºmenor being submerged. She comes out of it distraught and shocked, even though she has touched palantirs before, as she says before laying her hands on them. The Sovereign then explains to him that this vision will come true, and it began with Galadriel’s arrival.
This very powerful object is described by JRR Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings: “At first the globe seemed to him dark, black, moonlight shining on its surface. Then he felt a faint glow at the heart of the sphere, and he stopped his gaze so that “now it was impossible for him. Soon it seemed that everything inside was on fire; The ball was spinning, or the light was on.
This tool allows its user to project his mind where he wants and thus see what he wants. He can also discuss with another person who also has Palantir. People with great strength can manipulate the stones to see almost any part of Middle Earth.
In the third age, most of the Palantira were destroyed or lost. By the time of The Lord of the Rings, only four remain, two of which appear in the story (the Stone of Orthanc from Saruman, found by Gandalf and Aragorn, and the Stone from Tirith of Minas. by Denethor).
Two more spheres are revealed: the Stone of Minas Ithil, which Sauron discovered, and the Palantir of Elendil, located on the tower of Emin Beraid, west of the Shire.
Episode 4 of The Rings of Power is available on Prime Video.
