The fifth episode of “House of the Dragon” arrived this Sunday evening (18), with a royal wedding in the series and the emergence of a faction within House Targaryen.
Filled with betrayals, secret deals and a discovery that will change the course of the series’ history, the episode continues to keep the series on track from the parent series “Game of Thrones”. But while the series follows a well-defined recipe to please fans, that doesn’t mean it’s not original.
After the events of the previous episode, Princess Rhaenyra finds herself looking for a bridegroom to restore her reputation and strengthen her candidacy as heir to the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, King Viserys looks worse in every episode, and this one is no different.
In turn, Queen Alicent finds herself in doubt as to where to place her allegiance and whom to believe. A revelation that sounded a lot like the character throwing the green (yes, the pun was intentional), makes things clearer for Alicent, who appears dressed in green at the party in preparation for the royal wedding, in one of the more tense scenes. . of the episode.
In turn, Daemon shows up, much to King Viserys’ dismay. The Velaryons reappear in the episode, with young Laenor and Laena appearing older after appearing briefly in the first few episodes.
Rhaenyra receives a proposal that should change the course of things in the future. The proposal he makes ends with a royal wedding, but also with blood. It will be curious to see how the union promoted in the episode will develop in subsequent episodes.
Milly Alcock and Matt Smith shine again in the episode and the ambitious Targaryen duo have a lot of chemistry in the scene. It will be interesting to see how Emma D’Arcy fares alongside Smith, with the series poised to leap in time and replace actresses Rhaenyra (Alcock for D’Arcy) and Alicent (Emily Carey replaced by Olivia Cooke).
Though the Targaryens have their moments again, Emily Carey’s Alicent finally shines in this episode, after overshadowing the plans of her father, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). Alicent dressed in green will be something very surprising for the future of this story, and the moment she appears wearing the color is a gigantic power of the character.
I wouldn’t call the episode in question the best so far, and the dragons are still in the background. On the other hand, fans of the scenes bordering the gore that we saw in “Game of Thrones”, and that we have already seen in “House of the Dragon”, you might like a moment of episode 5, which will turn the face of the most sensitive.
The fact is that, although we’ve already seen notable moments in the series, it seems that tensions, enmities and hatreds are building up and simmering that at some point will explode, but that’s not yet to happen.
The first five episodes of “House of the Dragon” are now available on HBO Max. Episode 6 arrives on HBO and HBO Max next Sunday (25) at 10pm.
