‘Eike – Tudo ou Nada’ is taken from a book by Malu Gaspar and hits theaters on Thursday 22nd
For spectators used to seeing Nelson Freitas in the humorous Total ballast, it will perhaps be surprising to see him play the businessman Eike Batista in Eike: All or nothingwhich opens on Thursday 22. The book is based on the feature film produced by Tiago Rezende and directed by Andradina Azevedo and Dida Andrade, who also wrote the screenplay All or nothing: Eike Batista and the true story of Grupo Xby Malu Gaspar and published by Companhia das Letras.
Tiago is the son of Marisa Leão and Sergio Rezende. He produced the film of his sister, Julia Rezende, which premiered at the recent Gramado Festival, Next door. “Unlike that, this is my project. I bought the rights, I chose the director. Initially, I thought Eike: All or nothing with (director) João Jardim, but the conversation didn’t evolve because he was already busy with other projects. I ended up getting to these two (Andradina and Dida). It was a very rich and collaborative partnership, “he says.
In a very short time, and despite having faced the difficult period of the pandemic, Tiago already has four films behind him as a producer. We leave the others for later. The focus is now Eike: All or nothing. Tiago talks about his fascination with him for the character he has decided to approach. “He has had a dizzying rise. He has known both glory and decay. As a character, he is one whose story is worth telling.”
For Nelson Freitas, the story isn’t just about Eike Batista. “The film tells a sad story of Brazil”. And the directors: “Because of its size, the fact that it’s an adaptation and the true story of a famous character, All or Nothing is not like any other film we’ve done before, but that’s exactly what drove us. “.
Another factor was carte blanche. Andradina and Dida were awarded in Gramado for their previous films – The brute flower of will And 30 years of blues. The first, mainly, divided the criticism. They were called, among other things, sexists. Telling the story of Eike Batista could corroborate the insult. After all, Eike was married to one of the most beautiful and desired women in this country. Luma de Oliveira was the queen of the samba school drums and, joking or not, she paraded with that collar, which generated many reactions.
Prison
The first surprise is that the film focuses on Eike’s entrepreneurial career. The Luma episode boils down to a movie within a movie, about ten minutes. Boy Eike was instructed by his mother to win. He became one of the richest men in the world. He has lost all the fortune he earned in oil exploration. He was arrested.
From underground – his previous films were ultra-low budget productions – to production supported by one of the main Brazilian cinema production and distribution companies, Paris Filmes, the leap was big. The reporter teases: it looks like an Adam McKay film. Dida replies. “I understand what you’re saying and we’ve even thought about him. We use what we like and repress what we don’t like in his Oscar-winning films.” Namely, A Grande Aposta, on the North American stock market crisis in 2008, e Don’t look upabout two astronomers who discover a comet on a coalition course with Earth and struggle to convince the authorities of the danger.
as the Bothersome, by Guilherme Fontes, the film also wants to be an interpretation of Brazil. “Absolutely,” Dida agrees. It is no coincidence that the soundtrack feeds on different versions, instrumental or sung, of brazilian watercolor, the classic by Ary Barroso.
Eike, who became Brazilian – he proclaims himself a patriot – is yet another devoured by Brazil. Psychoanalytically, he always confronts his father’s ghost. You run after him, unable to reach him. It is the story of a failure, as much as Eike ends the film by believing in the possibility of his recovery.
New directions
A glorious failure and a beautiful interpretation of actor Nelson Freitas. He hopes the film, by revealing another face of his talent, opens up new directions for his career. The journalist risks Freitas being nominated to play him for the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix of cinema. “I swear? Do you think so?”
There are many quotes and references. Andradina and Duda sign the direction and the screenplay. Andradina has photo credits. Dida focused on directing and casting. How long will they work together? “For me, always,” says Dida. “We fight, it’s true, but I will always put up with this guy for the wonderful ideas he keeps giving me.”
Did Eike himself have any part in the film, did he express his views? It’s the producer who says, “Nothing, even if he hasn’t seen the movie yet.” The interview took place early last week. Eike – All or nothing the next day there would be a session in Rio that Eike had been invited to. On Thursday the film screened at the Miami Brazilian Film Festival in the United States. This Thursday comes to the rooms. It will have a good launch, but not mega. “We are counting on the charm of the character to attract the public. The situation is not good in theaters, but if there is a response from the public, we are ready to expand the circuit”, concludes the producer.
