Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, known for his work in the Oscar-winning film “No Rhythm of the Heart” and for the series “Acapulco”, will star in the series “They Came at Night”, developed for the Vix + streaming platform. from the TelevisaUnivision conglomerate.

Based on a true story, the series will tell the working routine of the team responsible for filming a Spanish version of the horror classic “Drácula” (1931).

This “version” was necessary because the original “Dracula”, directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi, was made in the early days of talkies and, at that time, there were still no dubbing or subtitling techniques for synchronized speech. .

Therefore, in order not to lose the audience that did not speak English, Universal Studio simultaneously produced this other version with Mexican actors and spoken in Spanish. The film was directed by George Melford (“Nails and Teeth”), who didn’t even speak Spanish and needed an interpreter to give instructions to the cast.

In order not to waste time and save money, the Mexican “Dracula” also used the same scenarios, in a relay scheme. While Browning drove by day, Melford drove at night. The title “They Came at Night”, which sounds like a horror movie, is actually an allusion to night shooting.

The Spanish version of “Drácula” was forgotten years after its release in 1931. It was only rediscovered in the 1970s, when it began to be appreciated and adored. Some critics consider it even better than the “original”, and even the Brazilian audience can make this comparison thanks to the availability of the rare DVD boxed version, which brings together four Dracula films from Universal.

In addition to acting, Derbez will also produce the series, which will have a comic tone and was created by two American screenwriters, Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher (from “Facade Couple”).

“I haven’t worked on Spanish-language television comedies for over ten years and was looking for something really special to come back to,” Derbez said in an official statement. “This story really caught my attention because it tells the story of Latin Americans who have to achieve more with fewer resources and more difficult conditions. It is also a world we never explored on Spanish language TV, Hollywood in the 1930s, but as in all moments in the history of the United States, the Latinos were there to do their part, even if history has forgotten them “.

“They Came at Night” doesn’t have a filming schedule or release date yet.

The news comes as a relief to fans of the actor, who was frightened in late August when he had to undergo complicated surgery after suffering an accident. At the time, the wife of the actor, actress and singer Alessandra Rosado said that Derbez’s recovery would be “long and difficult” and would require “many weeks of rest and rehabilitation”.

From all indications, he is healed and ready to work. Derbez is involved in several projects, including the adventure “Lotería”, directed by James Bobin (“Alice Through the Looking Glass”), without a preview date.
