Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: An ambitious historical fresco adapted from Balzac, performed by Benjamin Voisin.
Around the age of 20, Xavier Gianoli, then a student of letters, discovered Honoré de Balzac’s “La Comédie Humaine”, a pharaonic work of more than 90 works – novels, short stories, fables and essays – whose writing dates back to 1829. until 1850.
In 2021, he is engaged in a very ambitious project that will bring “Illusions Perdues”, the main book of “La Comédie Humaine” to the big screen. In cooperation with screenwriter Jacques Fieschi, the director is particularly interested in the second part of the story, which tells about the arrival of the hero Lucien de Rubempre in Paris. An idealist poet from Angoulême, he discovered that literary, intellectual and artistic life in Paris was only a facade for a vast cynical economic system.
Around the revelation of Benjamin Voisin, in the skin of the hero, Xavier Gianol invites an impressive cast: Gérard Depardieu, Vincent Lacoste, Jeanne Balibar, Cécile de France, Xavier Dolan, André Marconi, Louis-Do de Lanquesaing or even the late Jean. Stevenin.
When it was released, the film was a success, with a total of 991,288 admissions and generated strong enthusiasm for the original book. Resolutely modern, this sensuous and gritty mural is crowned with an average audience rating of 4.3 out of 5 on AlloCiné. Nominated 15 times at the 47th César ceremony, Illusions Perdues leaves with 7 awards, including Best French Film of the Year and Best Adaptation.
