Mike Flanagan gave us a cold sweat with The Mirror, The Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor or Les Sermons de Minuit. A horror/terror specialist, this director had already done a Stephen King adaptation with Jesse before directing Dr. Sleep, the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s classic The Shining.
It starred Danny Torrance as an adult, played by Ewan McGregor. Still deeply scarred by the trauma he experienced as a child at the Overlook Hotel, he had to fight to find some peace.
But when he meets Abra, a daring teenager with psychic gifts, his old demons resurface. Because a young girl who realizes that Dan has the same powers as her needs his help: she tries to fight the terrible Rose Klaka and her tribe True Knot, who feed on the gifts of innocent people like her to take over the world. ‘Immortality.

On Twitter, Mike Flanagan responded to a fan poster featuring Dick Holloran’s character. “We were very close to continuing. I always regret that the project was not implemented”The film director was worried.
“Due to the poor box office performance of Doctor Sleep, Warner Bros has decided not to start a sequel. The studio owns the rights, so there’s nothing I can do about it.”The director regrets.
The latter received the support of Katarina Kubrick, the daughter of Stanley, the author of The Shining, in 1980. “I’m really sorry to hear that”– he answered the director.
Indeed, Doctor Sleep only collected $72 million worldwide on a $45 million budget. In France, the work attracted only 258,000 visitors.
So we won’t have a Doctor Sleep sequel, but Mike Flanagan will be back soon with The Fall of House Usher, adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s classic. It will stream on Netflix.
The story tells about the tragic fate of Roderick Usher, the scion of a large family, who descends into madness after the death of his twin sister, Madeline. In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, the narrator is one of the main actors in the story.
Meanwhile, Mike Flanagan brings another horror series, The Midnight Club, to Netflix on October 7th. The story takes place in a hospital for adults with severe pathologies. Patients meet every night at midnight to share horror stories.
