The series tells about the mysterious circumstances of the voyage of the ship of emigrants from Europe sailing to New York. The passengers are all from different backgrounds, but share the same dreams and hopes for the new century and their futures abroad.
When they discover another ship on the high seas that has been missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they discover on board will turn their journey to a better world into a nightmarish mystery that will reveal the connections between each passenger, intertwined in a web of secrets.
Beyond 1899 we meet the two creators of the German series Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. If this new eight-episode piece of fiction is still keeping all of its mystery, many clues—starting with its poster—seem to point to its connection to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.
If Dark impressed with its narrative ambition, 1899 appears to be the two creators’ biggest project yet. The entire series was filmed at the famous Babelsberg Studios outside of Berlin. For the visual effects, the showrunner duo used the same technique as The Mandalorian: The Volume, a technology that consists of creating a huge set using giant LED screens.
The cast of the series is international. We find in particular Emily Beecham (In the Bad Country), Annerine Barnard (Golden), Andreas Pietschman (Dark), Miguel Bernardo (Elite), Makej Musial (The Witch), Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), Lukas Lingard Tonessen (Rain) or Maria Erwalter (ritual).
First of all, two French artists join this choral series: Mathilde Olivier, seen in Overlord, produced by JJ Abrams, and Jan Gael, who appeared in Duel au soleil and Le Rêve Français. In May 2021, when filming had just begun, AlloCiné was able to speak with the two actors about their characters.
Mathilde Olivier plays Clemens:She is trapped in an arranged marriage with someone she doesn’t love at all, she describes. And his goal on this boat is to discover a new world, to be able to free himself and choose his life. You don’t have to be arrogant, smile like the perfect girl everyone expects you to be.“
As for Ian Gael, he explains: “I, I play Jerome, who has come to Kerberos to face his past. He’s on a bit of a revenge trail. He is looking for someone who betrayed him and maybe on a boat.”
1899 will hit the platform this fall. If the official date hasn’t been announced yet, it should arrive in November. A rare fact for a Netflix series: 1899 premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
1899, coming soon to Netflix.
